2015/03/16偏鄉醫療 合心救難Remote Area Medical Outreaches

The sun rises on the shore of eastern Taiwan shining its first light on the mountains. Greetings, everyone. we are the mobile clinic from Kuangshan Tzu Chi Hospital. To better safeguard your health, please come to our free clinic location.

We see Tzu Chi’s medical service in Guangshan and Yuli. Yesterday was Kuanshan Tzu Chi Hispital’s 15th anniversary and Yuli Tzu Chi Hospital’s 16th anniversary. We see the medical staff led by the superintendents doing medical outreach in the remote villages and mountain areas. To reach poor villages or very remote spots, they have to trek over mountains and hills.

They visit these residents regularly every week to give them medical care, often at their homes. It started with Dr. Chiu Chao-jong of Kuanshan Tzu Chi Hospital. Though she passed away due to liver illness, medical staff at the hospital took up her spirit and continued to go to the mountains regularly to provide medical care to the people there as well we bring them nutritional supplements and needed supplies. Besides providing medical care, they also bring them their needed material goods.

They also help the elderly or people with mobility problems to clean up their homes. For people who are ill with no one helping them with getting in and out of bed or sitting up, they also provide them with electric beds to make it easier for them. Tzu Chi’s medical system always serves people in need with sincere love. How can we not be moved by this?

Meanwhile, in Yuli Tzu Chi Hospital, under the leadership of Superintendent Chang, doctors there also give of themselves earnestly. When two doctors, the Li brothers noticed that the town of Yuli was facing a shortage of medical staff, they decided to stay and safeguard Yuli by stepping up to fill the shortage of doctors. Then, when the 77-year-old Dr.

Li Sen-jia was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma a few years ago, he did not take a break from his job. While receiving cancer treatment, he still insisted on dedicating himself to practicing medicine in rural and remote areas to care for people with illnesses. He is ever so brave. Although suffering from an illness, he is just like a great ship captain who with the help of a sturdy boat can still steer the ship and ferry people to the other shore.

Despite being ill, I must not give up and get discouraged upon learning that I have a cancer. After all I am optimistic. He has truly lived his life to its fullest by serving the public. He gives of himself to save people from suffering. His mind is free from worries. Every day, he lives happily and positively in Yuli to safeguard its people and those living in the surrounding mountainous area.

Our medical personnel and staff also commit themselves in this way too. Although Yuli and Guanshan are small towns in rather remote areas, they reach out to care for people in the neighboring mountains and countryside. Such is the power of love, which can always enrich us and make our life full of spiritual riches. I hope everyone can encourage one another with such enlightened love and help each other.

We also saw a piece of news from the U.S. about our work with Healthy International Relief Foundation. Several days ago, their president came to Hualien and signed an MOU with Tzu Chi to deliver aid to West Africa because Sierra Leone in West Africa has been greatly impacted by the Ebola outbreak. It is a country struggling with poverty, with very limited medical resources. They are also lacking in material supplies.

Representatives from Healthy International Relief Foundation came from the U.S. with sincerity and made a special trip to Taiwan to sign an MOU with Tzu Chi. Tzu Chi has a project manager from the U.S. who was originally from Sierra Leone. He wants to help people in his home country. He also said that he will definitely apply Tzu Chi’s spirit with sincerity in this aid distribution. He will make sure that all the aid supplies are delivered to the people most in need.

We see a variety of medical supplies are loaded onto a 20-foot shipping container in the U.S. From Taiwan, containers of multifunction beds and instant rice have already arrived in Sierra Leone. Together, relief aid from both U.S. and Taiwan will go to help Sierra Leone as Ebola continues to devastate the country. We saw that in the Philippines, a fire earlier this month destroyed over 5,000 houses.

With so many families being impacted, Philippine Tzu Chi volunteers were very mindful in surveying the fire survivors’ needs. They created a roaster for aid distribution. On March 13 and 14, they held three aid distribution to the fire survivors. We see that the aid recipients sat in chairs full of gratitude. They were so orderly. They were all willing to become a person full of spiritual riches. They hope to help people and plant a seed of goodness by donating any coin they have.

They are very happy to give regardless of the donation amount. With wisdom and respect, Tzu Chi volunteers brought comfort and joy to these people. Such love and kindness are so precious and noble.

Humans are born with love and kindness. So, everyone has love and kindness. If we can give love and be kind, we will be happier. Those who are safe and well and help the ones in suffering are the most blessed people. By being the most blessed person and with spiritual riches in our heart, we can help those who are in need.

Not only do we need to give without asking anything in return, we also need to be grateful because we are safe and well, and because pooling people’s love together allow us to accomplish our mission to help people. This is what constitutes a life full of love and spiritual riches.
