20150319以善和愛為寶島Steadfastly Giving of Ourselves for a World of Goodness and Love

It’s indeed very nice to see how people help one another. Every year, Tzu Chi gives out tuition aids to children in need. Their families have encountered difficulties, so they need help. If people with love can reach out to them and provide them with the aid they need these children will be able to complete their education. In the future, they can contribute to society like everyone else.

That’s why Tzu Chi gives support to these families in need. They bring care to these families and provide tuition aids to their children so they can continue schooling. They also guide the children to be good to their parents and encourage them to become upright and useful members of society in the future.

This is how Tzu Chi volunteers give of themselves with love to care for those in need year in, year out. And they not just care for children in need--- We often see our medical volunteers going to places far away from urban areas to provide medical care to the elderly or the ill who are not able to travel outside to see a doctor.

Our medical volunteers truly have a sense of calling. See how they go to out-of-the-way places to serve people with love. They not only bring with them their medical briefcases, but also a heart full of love.Regardless of religion, they serve people with the same love. Christianity teaches us to love others as ourselves. By coming here to serve I’m living out that Christian teaching. Although Christianity and Buddhism are two different religions, they’re the same in spirit.

See how they bring love to people in remote areas. They bring care to the elderly there so they can also feel the warmth of our world. As people’s bodies are treated and cared for, their hearts are also comforted. Isn’t all this very comforting to see?

Indeed, this is how we should give of ourselves to bring about a world of goodness and love.We also see an elderly couple who are in their eighties. Seeing how they have difficulty going up and down the stairs and have tripped and fell several times, their borough head referred their case to Tzu Chi.

Tzu Chi volunteers immediately went to set up handrails for them. They also installed a grab bar in their bathroom and paved non-slip rug pads for them so they won’t slip. This is how Tzu Chi volunteers care for people with upmost sincerity and love.

We also see a group of our elderly volunteers. They’re truly living bodhisattvas. Apart from caring for others, they also do recycling to care for our Earth. They’re not worried about the fierce wind in winter or the scorching sun in summer, but only serve wholeheartedly with pure and selfless love.

They work among a pile of recyclables, but the smell never bothers them. In summer, they drench in sweat sorting recyclables. In winter, they shiver from cold, but still sit there doing the work mindfully.

When they recycle paper, they don’t just mix it all up.Instead, they use scissors to cut out the blank part of the paper even if it is only a small piece. It looks like they’re doing artwork. They cut the paper mindfully and attentively to make sure only the blank part is cut out and used to make good quality of paper again.

This is how they recycle resources for reuse.I am truly very grateful to these elderly volunteers. Despite the recent dispute about Tzu Chi, this group of our recycling volunteers still come to do recycling as usual. This is how they continue to walk the Bodhisattva Path single-mindedly and give of their love for our world. Their purpose of life is to give and they live for all humanity.

They lead a meaningful life and their minds are focused on recycling and never be disturbed by what happened. Recently, I often say that we need to keep our minds still and calm and not be affected by others. I hope that Tzu Chi members can be calm and at ease, which is actually good for us as we can use this time to cultivate and learn the Dharma with such a calm and still mind.

We should also pray for everyone to find a calm and still mind as well so our society can be safe and peaceful. To pray for people in the world, we need to settle our minds so our hearts can be even more sincere. My heart goes out to all Tzu Chi members. We have been serving our society for decades, but are now nonetheless involved in the recent dispute.

Despite that, we mustn’t regress. We have worked so hard to come to where we are today and are caring for so many people in needed. We mustn’t regress on the path we walk. I hope everyone can remain firm and steadfast. It’s not easy that we’ve inspired many people to give with love unconditionally, so we mustn’t just leave behind the needy we’re helping simply because what happened recently. This is my earnest hope for all Tzu Chi members.

All in all, coming to this world, there’s much suffering to endure, and we have to be able to endure this suffering. The Buddha teaches us that this is a world with much suffering to endure, which is referred to as the Saha world in Buddhism. In Sanskrit, Saha means endurance. To live, we need to be able to endure suffering. We must also remain firm on the path we walk so the dispute can end soon.
