Yesterday, Nepal had a powerful earthquake, measuring 7.8 in magnitude. At Mount Everest and nearby impacted areas, there were likely over a thousand visitors from various countries camped in the area. This earthquake caused numerous deaths and injuries among the visitors.
Survivors are still waiting to leave the area. This powerful earthquake also impacted several nearby countries, such as India and Bangladesh, as well as Tibet in China, causing deaths and injuries there. Buildings also sustained damages. Some have collapsed.
In an instant, impermanence struck and took away lives. Families will no longer see their loved ones; people’s homes, destroyed by the quake. This truly shows that life is fragile in the face of impermanence.
When Mother Nature is out of balance, we feel its powerful impact. Humans are indeed very insignificant against the forces of Nature. So, why do humans still try to conquer Nature? Therefore, we really should humble ourselves and be sincerely cautious. Mankind can only be safe and well if Nature is in harmony.
Seeing the aftermath of disasters really is unsettling. Every time when I mention an earthquake now, I still remember vividly the scene from Taiwan’s 921 Earthquake in 1999. Let us not forget it easily. Right now, people have to be very cautious in building design and safety protocols to minimize disaster, especially for earthquakes.
This is a necessary preparedness now for our future. We must be very careful. The power of love to care for Mother Nature and mankind needs to be accumulated through our daily actions.
From what we see happening in Nepal, we are also planning to help because Tzu Chi had once helped in Nepal after a devastating flood more than 20 years ago. wehelped rebuild homes destroyed by the flood. Although that was a long time ago and there is no local Tzu Chi volunteer there, now that the people of Nepal are suffering in this devastating disaster, I truly worry for them and their survival. We are now working on finding local contacts and accessible roads into the disaster zone to begin disaster relief.
We also saw news from Bosnia. Tzu Chi volunteers continue to provide care and aid to the survivors from last year’s flood disaster in Bosnia. The local government invited Tzu Chi volunteers to go to Bosnia to help the flood survivors.
At the time, Bosnia’s president also met and thanked Tzu Chi volunteers for coming to help. Volunteers shared with him Tzu Chi’s origin, how we are an organization from Taiwan, founded through people saving coins every day to help the people in need.
Last year, Tzu Chi volunteers from eight countries united together and went to Bosnia for a flood relief mission to give care and love to the flood survivors.
They went back again this time and brougham them material aid, including Tzu Chi’s eco-blankets and multi-functional beds.
Tzu Chi is a well-organized and sincere organization, which has impressed me very much. I am truly thankful to Tzu Chi volunteers offer help to our people in need.
Tzu Chi brings us the most essential relief goods. Because of the volunteers’ love and care, we no longer feel isolated and forgotten by the rest of the world.
Tzu Chi, an NGO group from Taiwan, has carried out its relief work in many countries around the world. Whenever there is a need, the volunteers will go and provide relief. This is the second time that Tzu Chi has come to Bosnia to carry out relief work. I would like to thank them for their help.
They are all very grateful to Tzu Chi. This is the power of Great Love. The local official said that they are very happy to receive the multi-functional beds. It can also be used as a chair where two persons can sit back-to-back comfortably on it. This is the spirit of Great Love bringing care and aid to the locals. Such live is truly heartwarming.
We also see news from Hualien. Around three o’clock early yesterday morning, a fire broke out in a village of Sioulin Township. The township government invited Tzu Chi to join them in providing services. Several homes were destroyed by the fire. Some affectees are not well-off to begin with.
They may need our help to repair their houses or rebuild their homes. We have commenced a survey to help them. This is the spirit of Tzu Chi’s charity mission---bringing timely relief to the affectees without delay.
There is also a fire disaster in the Philippines. On April 14, fires broke out simultaneously at two communities and impacted 473 families. Among the survivors, there is a woman whose house was destroyed by the fire. She lives in a poor community where houses are not in compliance with the law. This fire destroyed her home.
