We see mounting refugee crises around the world. Many people risk their life to seek asylum in another country. Malaysia has offered to accept refugees stranded at sea and to provide humanitarian assistance.
However, with such a large number of refugees, they hope non-government organizations (NGOs) can join the efforts to help these foreign refugees.
When I see a country in Asia stepping forward to encourage and facilitate its people and its civic groups in providing humanitarian aid for the arriving foreigners in hardship, just the fact of the seeing such news gives me much comfort. Such broadness of heart and mind to encourage good deeds from people is truly admirable.
We also see that in Burundi, a central African country, more than a month of unrest and violence there has caused more than 60,000 people to flee to Tanzania. A sudden huge influx of refugees crowding at camps has led to sanitation problems. Now more than 3,000 cases of cholera have been reported in Tanzania.
In Zimbabwe, a prolonged dry spell has caused the farm fields to fail to produce any crops. This nation is already poor, and now it’s facing failed harvests. There are many countries like this in the world. Think about these people suffering and starving, how can we waste any food? Because resources on the Earth are getting more and scarcer, food shortage is becoming a crisis.
Therefore, France has proposed a bill that bans supermarkets from destroying unsold but edible food to prevent food waste. The hope is for everyone to cherish food and not waste food resources. Indeed, there are many people in the world without food to eat.
So, the food supply should be carefully selected starting at its source to ensure that only healthy, uncontaminated food enters the market. Once in the market, we should not carelessly destroy and waste these foods. This bill proposed in France is truly admirable.
Also, the way Malaysia’s government is encouraging people to do good deeds by calling on humanitarian groups to extend their aid to the refugees is truly admirable as well. These decisions are made with a broad heart and wisdom in France, they’ve realized that food doesn’t come by easily, so we should cherish it. Their action to stop waste is admirable.
We also saw the continuing Tzu Chi disaster relief in Nepal. In our fifth team for the relief effort, we have a Chinese medicine doctor joining. As the need for Western medicine in emergency treatment slowly eases, Chinese medicine now has its uses.
Our Chinese medicine doctor, Dr. Chen, uses acupuncture to help local residents. At first, the locals were afraid of this kind of treatment but, after receiving the treatment on the first day, many of their aches and pains were relieved. On the next day, more patients came as word spread about this. Three was even a couple who came together.
Some locals suffer from joint pain and could not really walk. After receiving the acupuncture treatment, their pain was greatly relieved. Therefore, patients who had been treated referred more people to come.
In fifth disaster relief and medical team, we also saw Supt. Lai from Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital treating patients very carefully with tender loving care. Local medical professionals from Nepal also join our free clinics. They feel that physicians from Taiwan are so nice.
This is very heartwarming Tzu Chi’s medical team treats not only people’s immediate medical needs, but at the same time, relieves their post disaster stress or hardship Tzu Chi’s physicians and nurses register to go to Nepal in shift and give of themselves mindfully.
They regard this chance to help as a blessing and serve people in need to create blessings. It takes people who cherish their blessings to create blessings.
We saw news in Taiwan that the waste disposal issue has resurfaced now. However, let us review the example of Pingtung.
For more than two years now, local county government officials and the community heads have all been very supportive of Tzu Chi’s concept of recycling Tzu Chi volunteers have also been very dedicated in the recycling efforts to reduce waste at its root.
They educate the public to take the initiative to sort out recyclables from waste. People in Pingtung have set an example for us to follow. Here you go, Thank you. This is for paper. This is for plastics. I came along when my mother. Watching the volunteers doing recycling made me realize that it takes everyone’s effort to do recycling to prevent Earth from being polluted.
He has joined us in recycling for almost a year. Except for the monthly exam at school he has only missed once or twice and has an almost perfect attendance. Cherishing the Earth’s resources is what we all must continually strive to do.
If it is the right thing to do, just do it. Taiwan is truly not a big island. We must cherish the resources that we have. Everyone should remain confident and firm about or belief in doing recycling and not be affected by situations around us.
We should stay calm face problems with wisdom. A piece of waste paper may seem insignificant, but it can be blown everywhere by the wind and cause pollution to the land and the air.
In summary, Pingtung is a role model for everyone to learn from, not to mention that Tzu Chi volunteers everywhere are always doing their best. In total weight, Pingtung is able to reduce 57- tons of waste with recycling. This is because they cherish and value recyclables.
By addressing the root causes, their waste production naturally decreases. When people pool their power of love together, there is nothing impossible to achieve. As long as we are determined, we can do it. When people join together in their love for a clean Earth, their pure mind will purify the environment. This is what we must strive hard toward.
