20150626 增長諸善濟有情 Bringing Love to Haiti and Nepal

We see Haiti. Several days ago, Tzu Chi U.S. volunteers went to Haiti to give out rice to those in need. See how they conducted the rice distribution with warm, sincere love and bowed 90 degrees when handing out the rice to our aid recipients. After giving out the rice to people, they even helped to carry it for them and supported them on their way home.

Each family could receive two bags of rice and see how they carried the rice on their heads. Although it was heavy, they were very happy. Our volunteers were also very happy for them.
“Seeing how happy the locals are to receive our rice, I’m also very happy. For the next three months, they’ll be well fed.”

Our volunteers also donated some rice to the Sisters of Saint Anne. The institute was very grateful and will use the rice to help the needy. Regardless of religion, they accepted our rice to help the locals in need.
Tzu Chi volunteers have been serving in Haiti for many years, so they’ve inspired many locals to become our volunteers and the locals are all very respectful to Tzu Chi volunteers.

For the rice distribution this time, although our volunteers were worried about how to maintain order at first, everything went well and everyone was happy. It was very moving. Many families have received our rice which can last them three months.

I’m very grateful to Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture for providing rice to us every year so we can donate it to the needy in many countries and let them feel respected and loved. Isn’t this what we can do to help better people’s lives?

In this world, there are many people suffering, but only those who have affinities with Tzu Chi can come across us and receive our aid. In Haiti, there are still many people in need who we’re not able to reach and provide aid to them. Thankfully, there are local nuns, priests and volunteers who are helping us to do this. Before the distribution, our volunteers had visited people one by one to create a name list of those who were eligible to receive our aid.

Among those in need, they had to see who were more in need than others. Otherwise, there were too many of them, and we were unable to provide aid to everyone. We also see Nepal. We’ve inspired many of the rich in Nepal to give with love. Take Mr. Dugar for example. His two brothers have also been inspired to take part in our volunteer work. See how Mr. Dugar personally brought our portable bed to a family living in a tent. Mr. Dugar’s parents also volunteered with us.

They are very rich people, but see how humble they are. This is truly not easy. Also, many locals have taken up our practice of saving money to help others. There are truly many touching stories to share.
Yesterday, our Tzu Chi members again went to visit a woman in her thirties who had difficulty walking after a stroke and taught her how to do exercise. This is how Tzu Chi members gave of themselves in Nepal to help those who suffer helplessly.

There is also a little girl who suffers from facial deformities that has caused her right eye to become blind and her left eye to remain open. “As she can’t close her left eye, it’s impossible to keep it moist. So, her vision will get worse and worse and she may gradually lose her eyesight.”

Supt. Kao is still worried about her even after returning to Taiwan. The doctors on our ninth relief team also went to see her. We took the little girl to a local hospital to see a doctor. The doctor said that since she is still young, if she has surgery now, the bones of her skull and face will still become displaced as she grows up. Her doctor estimated that she still has to wait for four or five years. But after four or five years, can her left eye still be saved? No one knows. So, we still need to think about what to do as she still has a long way to go in life.

There are indeed many people suffering helplessly like this in Nepal who need us to provide them with continued care. All in all, Tzu Chi members’ love is truly very deep. Their hearts are still with the locals even after they’ve returned from Nepal. With their pure enlightened love, they feel deeply for the suffering in Nepal. Too bad Taiwan is so far away from Nepal. But as we still have mid and long-term aid projects to carry out in Nepal, Tzu Chi members will continue to go and serve there. What’s more important is to inspire the locals to give with love.

I heard that because many of our Tzu Chi members serving in Nepal are young people, they’ve inspired many young local people who are now planning to set up a Tzu Chi Collegiate Assn. in Nepal. Hearing that, I’m very happy.

Many local doctors have also promised to serve as our volunteer doctors. If Tzu Chi’s medical assn. and collegiate assn. can be set up there and more locals can be inspired to serve as our volunteers, I’m sure the suffering in Nepal can be better helped, and the time they need to stand on their own feet will be shortened greatly. So, we must inspire more people to give with love.
