20150701感恩醫護療疾患 Be Grateful to the Unsung Heroes in the Dust Explosion Incident

The world is filled with much suffering. Look at how many natural disasters there are! In different countries around the world be it natural disasters caused by erratic climate conditions, manmade disasters, or tragedies brought about by accidents, we see that disasters have kept occurring one after another.

That’s why the Buddha teaches us the truth about suffering. He reminds us that in this world, there’ much suffering to endure. He also shares with us that disasters actually originate from the ignorance in people’s minds as it is our ignorance that has brought so much impurity to our world. The force of ignorance is as powerful as turbulent waves. That’s why we need a strong force of love to counteract this unwholesome force of ignorance.

At a time when the high waves of ignorance and the force of impurity are surging, we need a stream of purity and a powerful force of love to subdue them. We see the recent dust explosion, which has never happened in Taiwan before. Many young people have been injured and are still fighting for their lives in the hospitals.

And many doctors and nurses are working day and night without rest to care for the injured and stay by their side to pull them back from the brink of death. When treating the injured and changing dressings for them, doctors and nurses are all very wary and worried for them. So, they do whatever they can only to alleviate the emotional and physical suffering of the injured. All they hope is that their patients’ physical pain can be eased and their minds can be calm.

This is their only wish, which is as earnest as that of the patients’ families. So, we truly need to give medical personal our greatest support and be very grateful to them. Right after the incident happened many unsung heroes, such as firefighters, police officers, and many other people at the incident site all did what they could to help. From the incident we’ve witnessed the kindness and love of the people of Taiwan.

This is truly praiseworthy. There was a young man who was injured himself, but he still rushed back to the fire to help others. He didn’t know that his legs have also been severely burned. I saw a girl squatting down, so I took her to where there was water to rinse her. Didn’t you know you’re injured? I did wonder why there were so many holes on my skin.

The explosion occurred on the night of June 27. So, three days have passed and today is the fourth day after the incident. We should know that to these young people who have been severely burned one second is like a year. How have they been passing their time? Their parents waiting in the hospitals are grieved and worried, and they all hope that there will be a good news.

So, we need to calm the minds of the patients’ families so medical professionals can concentrate on treating their loved ones without worry. It’s very important to bring comfort to the families. I think that all hospitals that have taken in the injured this time should let our volunteers go to their hospitals to comfort the patients’ families.

Only when people have peace of mind can our society be peaceful. This time, the New Taipei City Government will pay for the medical expenses of the injured accrued during the first three months. The medical cost for skin substitutes, burn ointments, albumin injections, etc. could amount to tens of thousands NT dollars a day per person. Besides, many medical personnel are needed. We see Supt. Chien of our hospital in Taichung.

He is a plastic surgeon and an authority on burn care. Two days ago, he went to our hospital in Taipei to show the support to our medical staff there. If necessary, medical staff of our Tzu Chi hospital who are experienced in caring for critical burn patients can go to Taipei to help. Every hospital is very busy right now.

So, I hope that everyone can take good care of themselves so there won’t be any more critical patients who need emergency care and doctors can focus on caring for the burn patients from the explosion this time. Over the last few days many hospitals in Taipei and across Taiwan all have very heavy workload.

We can image that on the night of the incident, how many doctors and nurses were called and rushed back to their hospitals to help treat those who were injured by the explosion. Many firefighters and police officers also worked hard to help. When impermanence strikes like this, we are lost for words at what has happened.

All in all, we need to pray sincerely all the more, in the past few days, we’ve been calling on Tzu Chi volunteers across Taiwan to hold prayer gatherings and invite everyone in their communities to pray together for the victims of the explosion. This is what we are doing now. Next, I hope we can organize large-scale prayer services to pray for everyone around the world and those affected by the explosion this time.

May every one of the injured get through this difficult time and our society enjoy more peaceful and safety.
