20150717人間菩提 ~ 大悲無怨守護愛 Great Compassion to Safeguard All Living Beings

Ebola outbreak in Liberia has resurfaced. People need to be more vigilant in sanitation and details in life. People also have to contemplate deeply about the way of their life. In Africa, there are different cultures resulting in rituals and other ways of life which may contribute to the outbreak.

It really takes wisdom to discern what’s the most healthy ways to live and to contribute to world peace. For example, avian flu, foot and mouth diseases and mad cow diseases have been in existence. No matter what livestock it is, such as pigs, cows or sheep, if they got sick due to a virus outbreak, a massive culling will result.

After the outbreak is brought under control, raising of livestock resumes to meet consumer demand. It has always been like this. The cycle keeps on repeating. Why let it repeat?

We eat to take in life sustaining nutrients not to satisfy only our desire for food. In fact, vegetables are also very delicious and full of nutrients. Do not create unwholesome karma in demanding meat which leads to raising mass livestock.

The global population of over 7.3 billion is more than enough for the Earth as its air is being polluted by humans and livestock. To satisfy people’s desire for meat, we raise a lot of livestock where their manures pollute the environment.

Animals should be left to live in their natural ways because in the six realms of existence, it’s impossible not to have animals. We should let them be the way they are. They are part of the reincarnation in the six realms of existence.

Let animals live in their natural habitats without raising them for special purposes. Then we can be safe and well. Do not raise animals purposely and demand meat in every meal. Then the Earth will be cleaner and our air will also be cleaner.

It is very heartwarming to see Tzu Chi volunteers serving as living Bodhisattvas. In Yunlin, Taiwan, there is a family who lives in a warehouse building that used to be not ventilated. Tzu Chi volunteers paid the family a visit and saw the family living in hard conditions. It was messy inside and had no windows for ventilation.

The local Tzu Chi volunteers truly felt for them. They quickly gathered together to help clean the house, install window, build a partition wall and other renovations for the family. Their home is totally changed. See, the new window provides ventilation and allows the light to come in. Also, the partition wall creates an extra bedroom.

Such is the Great Love that powers Tzu Chi volunteers to help improve this family’s living conditions. Every day we can see inspirational stories like this all because of the power of Great Love. I am truly grateful for this.

There are many touching stories, especially in caring for the patients in the powder explosion accident. Supt. Chao is very grateful to the two nurses from Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital for setting off immediately to Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital to give support.

Not only did they care for the patients, they even provided strict guidance on how to give care to the burn patients, which greatly boosted the morale and gave support to the nurses at the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital.

Supt Chao said that he’s really grateful to our doctors and nurses for loving the patients and caring for them day and night. Every time they enter the burn ward, they have to be very careful and wear a new isolation gown before they can go in.

Every day, it takes over 100 doctors and nurses to care for the burn patients as changing the wound dressings takes four or five medical staff. Patients have to get their dressings changed twice a day. To go in and out of the isolation ward on a tight schedule medical staff forgo water and meals because they don’t want to waste any second.

They think coming out of the burn ward to eat or using the restroom takes too much time. Not to mention they have to change to a new isolation gown every time. Doing all these takes time. Therefore, they rather not drink and delay their meal time to care for the patients first. That’s their power of love for the patients.

We see a news report that really warms our hearts. When Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) found out that some medical staff of Tzu Chi hospitals in Dalin and Taichung had to travel nearly daily with THSR back and forth between central and northern Taiwan to support Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, THSR offered free transportation to our medical staff.

This is not about the money saved for our staff but highlights THSR’s respect for the medicals staff. This is truly a great encouragement to the medical professionals.

The medical staff in our hospital, also offer their keen support to help care for the burn patients. Take for example Dr. Hsu Hon-Da, a plastic surgeon at Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital. He spends his weekends, both Saturday and Sundays, in Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital to support the medical team.

He said that although it is only two days a week, it is enough for medical staff in Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital to take a break and relax. That’s why he decided to go to Taipei to support them. This is how the doctors and nurses give of themselves with love. Their love makes our world warm and peaceful.

We see that one of the young burn patients has moved out of the intensive care unit. His doctor, Dr. Wang, promised him that if the works hard at rehabilitation, he will be well enough to attend his friend’s memorial service. Finally, not only did he move out of ICU and into a regular ward, he’s also very diligent in doing physical therapy. Doctors and nurses are doing their best to care for him.

All in all, such is the mission of doctors. Their effort to care for the patients is a pure and selfless giving. Their Great Love is truly touching.
