For our Earth to enjoy peace and safety, it all depends on whether we have a grateful heart to her or not. If we’re grateful to her, then we need to cherish and protect her and do not do harm to her. We should be grateful to our Earth for sustaining our lives. Apart from that, we also need to be grateful for the favorable weather we enjoy.
Here in Hualien, a fire broke out due to an electrical shortage, damaging six houses and claiming the lives of two children. This is truly very sad to see. Tzu Chi volunteers have gone to bring care to those affected and give out emergency cash to them. This is how our volunteers always bring timely aid to those in need. We also see how Tzu Chi volunteers give out the rice from Taiwan to the needy in many countries around the world. Take Africa for example.
To personally deliver the rice to those most in need our volunteers in Africa traveled a long way to reach a poor community. See how our African volunteers give of themselves with love just to relieve the suffering of others. With the rice they gave out to people, many families are able to be fed. All this is made possible by our volunteers’ love.
Of course, our volunteers would tell people that the rice they received was provided by Taiwan’s government. In the footage, we see that many children there didn’t have shoes to wear. So, the Catholic Taichung Diocese in Taiwan has collected used shoes and shipped them to Africa. See how happy the children are wearing the shoes!
The diocese in Taiwan truly cares very much about children in Africa. It is truly remarkable that they could send shoes to the children. I’m also very grateful to our local volunteers in Africa for traveling such a long distance to deliver the rice to the needy there. All this is indeed very touching. In Tacloban, Philippines, Tzu Chi volunteers are also giving out rice to the needy.
Seeing so many people leading a difficult life, can we not feel for them? Moved by our volunteers’ love, a man was inspired to serve as our volunteer.
I’m very grateful to Tzu Chi Foundation. Not just me, all the people in Tacloban and other people Tzu Chi Foundation has helped around the world will be very grateful. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to serve as a volunteer.
He was also there to receive the rice himself. But see how he helped to distribute the rice and carry the rice for others before receiving his own rice! There were many touching stories like this. In Myanmar, people have been affected by flooding for nearly two months. The waters are gradually receding now. About a month ago, when the flooding first occurred, Tzu Chi volunteers went to survey the disaster areas and see what they could do to help!
Even now, they’re still providing support to the flood victims. Seeing how people suffer, our volunteers feel deeply for them. Indeed, only living bodhisattvas will reach out to the suffering like this. As long as we are able, we should do all we can to help others with love. It may still take a while before Myanmar can recover from the flooding. So, we’re now looking at how to help affected farmers and other people rebuild their lives.
Myanmar has suffered from many disasters, such as drought before and flooding now. People there have suffered a lot. Here in Taiwan, everyone is very worried about the Dengue fever outbreak. So, Tzu Chi volunteers have mobilized to help clean up schools, parks, etc. Hopefully, every place can be cleaned up quickly. Otherwise, the Dengue fever outbreak is truly very worrying. All the actions of love start with our hearts.
Only when love arises in our hearts will we take action to serve with love. This is the way of Tzu Chi volunteers in Taiwan and other countries. Just now, we saw the disasters in many countries and the Dengue fever outbreak in Taiwan. So, we must be aware and stay on guard. We also see that in Cambodia, people in a village have been affected by severe drought. So, a school principal there informed Tzu Chi of their plight.
Tzu Chi volunteers not only brought material supplies to them but also provided the school with water purification devices and guided the children to wash their parents’ feet. Seeing how their children showed their filial piety to them like this, the parents were very moved, happy, and also very content. Love is truly very powerful.
We also see our volunteers in Indonesia sharing with people not to burn paper money in the seventh lunar month, but save their money to help the needy. This is how they share correct views with people to instill correct faith in them. It’s not impossible to ask the elderly people to stop burning paper money. As long as we share with them what the correct practices are, they will stop it and the air will be much cleaner.
They now understand that global warming will lead to disasters and pollution will lead to global warming. So, to reduce pollution, they don’t burn paper money now and even do recycling work to help protect the environment. This is the start of a virtuous cycle, and this is what everyone can do. So, I hope everyone can be inspired to do it.
Seeing so many countries being affected by disaster and so much suffering in the world, we should realize that all this originates from people’s minds. So, we must follow true principles and walk the correct path in life. Only then can we enjoy peace and safety and our society be harmonious.
