Project Director of Greenpeace Foundation Lo Ke-rong, “In fact, impulse buying is quite common. About 54% of the public say that it’s probably due to marketing strategies of giving discount or buy-one-get-one-free, they buy things they don’t need or things not suitable for them.

The textile industry causes major pollution to the environment. If consumers do not realize that their buying behaviors lead to serious environmental problems, they would only create more pollutions.”

“How many days does it take to sort these out?”

Used clothes recycling employee Miss Chang, “Days” It takes forever. It’s hard to say; maybe a whole year.”

“Aunty, you’ve been sorting out clothes. Have you seen a lot of new clothes here?”

Used clothes recycling employee Miss Chang, “Yes, a lot.”

Look at all those clothes piles up like a mountain, many with price-tags still attached and look new. I feel sad after seeing this. Nobody wants them; what can be done about this?

They occupy space; what can be done? These donated clothes keep on increasing. Every year, the garment industry keeps on expanding, so, there are many manufacturers.

They have to sell their clothes through marketing to meet the demands of many consumers. All in all, the cycle of consumptions, manufacturing, and piling-up of clothes never stops.

Unwanted clothes ended up being in rubbish dumps. How do we dispose of this rubbish? Some of them are incinerated. No wonder we see air pollution every day.

We then inhale the polluted air that we created. This is not right. It shouldn’t have happened. People inhale polluted air and develop various illness.

Problems in this world are caused mostly by people’s mindset. When a mindset has gone astray and becomes widespread, people start to have incorrect views, and things they do will not be right, leading to regrettable consequences.

How do we deal with air pollution? It affects people’s health regardless of where they live because we are under the same sky. Since humans created this problem, the solution lies in us humans.

How do we solve this problem? We can begin with our daily life. Otherwise, the pollutions will become worse. Besides the air pollution, water is also polluted, so is the land.

They are all caused by humans. Humans are the root cause. It is the time for people to awaken now and work for the well-beings of the world.

Nowadays people have a lot of desire and are driven by their desire for material possessions. Moreover, they want to live a life of leisure, and turn away from hard work.

People in the past were frugal, hardworking, and willing to give themselves. Nowadays, people are driven by conveniences. They discard things easily and buy new ones.

People buy more than they need and throw away extra stuff even when they are still new. People have developed such wasteful habits, which caused pollution to the air, land, etc.

Now, the global climate has changed. This is truly pitiful. How will people realize the greater meaning of life? It is hard for people to learn life’s principles.

In watching the Dharma talks I’ve given previously, I feel it’s a pity that people are not taking in the Dharma and practice it in their life. What can be done about it?

This is about their wisdom-life. We live in a space that is boundless, and a time that is infinite. But our life is not infinite. Rather, our time is very limited.

Human life lasts only a few decades, which will go by very quickly. But the air pollution caused by incinerating rubbish will last a long time.

We need to reduce the pollution or stop it altogether. If we allow the pollution to continue, the consequences will be unimaginable.

No matter how much time it may take, it has to start somewhere. Let us take the initiative to purify our world. We should start with purifying people’s hearts by purifying ours first.

For people, we purify their hearts. For the environment, we need to take the initiative to clean up the world. We should have this mindset.

“What did you make the bag with? So pretty!”

Grandma Cheng May-Lan, “IT’s a sofa cover.”

“Someone gave it to you?”

Grandma Cheng May-Lan, “Yes, I made the bag with it. This is also made from the sofa cover.”

"What did you make? What’s it for?”

Grandma Cheng May-Lan, “A coin purse, good for grocery shopping.”

Everyone, our population is growing. I hope we’ll reduce our pollution by starting with ourselves. Let us purify our hearts, curb our cravings for food, and cherish the material goods we already have.

If everyone acts together with the same understanding and consensus, that would be nice. Otherwise, it’ll be too late. Our population is growing every day.

Moreover, people live longer now. Many elderly people are still quite healthy, and many of them can still work. All in all, we hope everyone can live a long and healthy life, but as our population grows, we can’t just leave the elderly wither away.

As the population continues to grow, the most important thing is to stay healthy. Let’s start with ourselves. We need to be vigilant and sincerely pious.

If everyone makes a pious vow to be a vegetarian, not for the sake of religion but health, then perhaps, the Earth will recover from pollution slowly, if not immediately.
