20180603回因向果誓願行Make Vows, Create Seeds of Kindness, and Form Good Affinities

Having attended the Dharma services makes me become peaceful and free of afflictions. I’m very grateful. I definitely will grow in wisdom. And, with my initial vow, I’ll be more diligent in walking the Bodhisattva Path.

It’s been 20-some years since I joined Tzu Chi. In Malaysia, Tzu Chi started from scratch 20-some years ago, but now we have established its four missions of charity, medicine, education, and culture. We surely want to continue carrying out these missions.

To be diligent in cultivation, we must make vows first. With initial vows, we carry them out each step of the way in the right direction. This way, our spiritual cultivation is truly in line with our conduct and vows. If we deviate from our line of conduct and vows, our willpower becomes weakened. Then, we are not cultivating ourselves, and we’ve lost the purpose of cultivation.

Therefore, we must be alarmed about this at all time, and never go astray on the path of cultivation. As the old saying goes, “A slightest deviation can take us far off course.” We have encountered the Dharma which is hard to find. We have now heard the Dharma, made great vows of serving others with Tzu Chi, and practiced them amongst people.

When serving amongst people, we must be diligent and cultivate ourselves sincerely. We must abide by this with our initial aspiration. No matter how long it will take us, we should keep practicing on the right path with our aspiration. Such a practice will be meaningful.

When we first make vows, we must have deep faith. We use wisdom to make the right choice. After we make the choice, we should have deep faith in our decision. We deep believe that the path we have now walked on is the result of all the karmic seeds we have planted in the past. An aspiration can lead to an ocean of good deeds. As a seed of kindness creates innumerable goodness; innumerable goodness comes from one seed of kindness.

Hence, we aspire to have deep faith that is how we plant seeds of kindness. We need to be mindful to understand this concept. Our every single move, every gesture is a karmic seed. As we speak, we also create a seed. If we create a good seed, it let us form good affinities with others.

We should be firm in carrying out the vow of having our every thought as a thought of kindness. With this thought of kindness, what we do will benefit people. We aspire to have a heart of the Bodhisattva, meanwhile, we do things to benefit others with a kind heart, we benefit from it as a result.

When we give rise to kind thought, it is us who will benefit from it. One becomes a bodhisattva the moment he aspires to give of himself. Bodhisattvas carry out their vow to help people; they practice the Six Paramitas. Therefore, when we help others to be delivered, we are in fact delivering ourselves.

For example, we want to take a person to safety, so we drive a car to transport him. In order to transport someone to a safe place, a driver is needed. Yet, as the person we helped has arrived to the safe place, so have we. We deliver ourselves when we deliver others, and benefit ourselves when we benefit others. The principle is obvious and quite simple.

Therefore, when we take action after having a thought of kindness, the thought of kindness is a karmic seed, and the result of the action we took is the fruit. Between the seed and the fruit, there’s karmic affinity at play. Those that need our help are where our karmic affinity lies. Let us follow the practice of going amongst people and forming good affinities.

We keep giving rise to seeds of kindness, we aspire, have people whom we can serve, and carry out such good deeds well. So, those who need our help provide karmic conditions for us to serve amongst people. It’s important that we serve people and form good affinities with them. We have to be mindful in doing this.

The karmic cause is our deep faith and clear understanding of the Dharma. The Karmic condition is people in need. This is called karmic cause and condition. Why do we engage in spiritual cultivation? It’s to learn life’s principles. Knowing about life’s principles is not enough, we have to put them in practice.

What are we cultivation? We cultivate our mind to have correct views, we will give rise to thoughts of kindness. With correct views, we will naturally harbor kind thoughts and do deeds that benefit. When we take good care of our mind to have correct views, our mind will be upright. Having correct views, which leads us to do good deeds. Uprightness and kindness are the karmic cause and condition, which will lead to a result, or retribution.

So, we must believe in the law of karma. People with afflictions bring suffering onto themselves. When we are entangled in afflictions and ignorance, we must astray, do bad deeds, and create negative karma. When we keep on creating negative karma, it will be hard for us to get rid of our ignorance for a very long time.

So, we have to be very, very careful. We must have deep faith and a clear understanding of the Dharma. Then we’ll be on the straight, broad Bodhi Path, and our heart will always be filled with spiritual joy.

Everyone, we must practice the Dharma, carry out our vows, have deep faith, and create wholesome seeds. The thoughts in our mind come from the karmic seeds in our mind. If we keep our initial aspiration for eons of time and always keep that karmic seed we’ve planted, we will eventually attain Buddhahood.

Engaging in spiritual cultivation is to live a disciplined life. If we aspire to spiritual cultivation and we don’t practice the Dharma or seize time to serve, our life will be wasted as it diminishes with time. So, we must be very mindful in this.
