20180602深心信解如來法Serving Others with a Clear Understanding of the Dharma

As Tzu Chi volunteers, we help people in need. We are blessed because we are able to lend a hand to others and partake in rice distributions. This is walking the Bodhisattva Path.

We should always offer our help to those in need. We should live up to Master’s expectation and do good. We should always keep Master’s teachings in mind, so we know how to give of ourselves.

I am truly happy when Ihear Master’s voice, it is as if that Master is right next to us and leads us personally. We would never forget all the good work that Master has done. We will help Master to promote Tzu Chi mission for good.

Great Bodhisattvas make great vows to serve amongst people unwaveringly. For a long period of time, they set an example to serve and inspire people to do good to benefit others. They vow to always help the Buddha in delivering all beings.

Many lifetimes, they come to the world with a mind of dedicating themselves to walking the Bodhisattva Path. They are truly Great Bodhisattvas.

There are also people who just start to learn to be a living bodhisattva. We call young volunteers “little bodhisattvas”. Although they are young, they have encountered the Dharma and are inspired to do good by following the Dharma.

At home, our parents and elders reminded us to do recycling. We bear in mind what they told us. Today, we can pass on the environmental protection concept we’re learned since we were little to other people. This makes me feel good, because doing recycling helps our Earth.

When promoting recycling, I saw people sign their names down on the list to be volunteers, I felt that we have truly done something meaningful.

These young volunteers have taken in what others have taught them and simply carried such teachings out. There are also people who are older, when they understand the Dharma they’d learned, as time passes, they use their time to practice the teachings.

Using their time to engage in spiritual cultivation; which benefits themselves while helping others. At the same time, their actions benefit both themselves and others. We cultivate ourselves when we start the process of helping others.

Out heart is focused. Only when we give rise to a thought of kindness will we take actions to help others. The moment when we give rise to a thought of kindness, we are benefitting ourselves. As we have given rise to a thought of doing good, this thought is our initial thought to cultivate spiritually.

If what we do also helps others people, then both parties receive benefits at the same time. With this kind of understanding, we can practice the Way of Bodhisattvas. We must also harbor a sincere heart in serving with this understanding without any other thought. This is the mentality we should have for the rest of our live.

From now on, we can keep this in our consciousness; it is a consciousness that gives rise to kindness. With sincerity and earnestness, we seek the Dharma, and life after life, we serve amongst people, and interact with good and upright people.

We ought to do that life after life. Let us serve with this understanding. That one thought of kindness can embrace and help so many people. If many people give rise to such an aspiration in the same moment, it can accumulate to do great things.

Such is the concept of infinite I often spoke of. We must understand this concept. This is how we develop honesty and integrity. Such is why we need to comprehend the meaning of the Buddha’s teachings.

If we understand the meaning of the Buddha’s teachings, the Dharma we’ve heard is like spoken directly by the Buddha. It’s like we live in the Buddha’s time and listen to his teachings.

The words he gave back then are the Dharma we know now. The Dharma never changes despite the changing time. Such is the everlasting nature of the Dharma. So, in emulating the Buddha, we need to learn the Buddha’s knowledge and views. The Buddha’s teachings guide us to learn his knowledge and views.

The Buddha expounded the Dharma for us to know life’s truth. He wanted us to not only know about life’s truth but to see it, and for us to walk the Bodhisattva Path and cultivate ourselves. Not only can we see life’s truth, we can also practice it in daily life through volunteering work.

By serving people while cultivating ourselves, we gain insights into life’s truth. Because we gain insights into life’s truth trough serving people, we want to inspire others to do the same; we give rise to a thought of kindness and invite others to do good deeds with us.

We gain insights while serving people; others also gain insights while serving people. This way, everyone gains insights. This is how we walk the Bodhisattva Path together. This is how we learn the Buddha’s knowledge and views. By personally serving others, we see the Dharma at work.

When we see the Dharma, we can practice it. This is how we learn the Buddha’s knowledge and views. To achieve this, we need to develop deep faith and have a clear understanding of the Dharma. We need to believe in the Buddha’s teachings mindfully.

Only with faith can we enter Buddha’s teachings; only after we’ve entered the teachings can we see the Dharma; only after we see the Dharma can we know how to practice it; only after we practice it will we gain insights into the Dharma. The insights we gain are the Dharma-body of the Buddha.

Once we gain insights into the Dharma, life’s truth, and how life’s principles work, we will naturally understand the Great Way of Truth.
