20190616轉貧為福悲智行Carrying Out Compassionate Vows in East Africa

Medical equipment there is rather basic and it could be lacking. The medical service for the locals is almost free. They only need to pay a little for it. But, if the medicine gets used up, that’s it. The medical service system there can do with more help.

20% of population is affected by HIV. There is also malaria. Cholera has just been contained. Also, there are yellow fever and other infectious diseases.

These diseases are highly contagious. We need to minimize the risk of getting them under the circumstances we are in and difficulties we may face; due to the lacking of the medical resources, We must have a high level of adaptability to give people a good healthcare service.

Recently, we have seen news about the people suffering in East Africa. Tzu Chi Volunteers went to East Africa and reached out to people there. The volunteers who came back all pointed out that life is truly full of suffering there and people suffering hardship.

Dr. Yeh Tien-Hao And several other TIMA members spent time to pay home visits to patients in need. They saw that people truly suffer and live in dire poverty, which is beyond description. On top of poverty and illness, the whole family has almost nothing, even if they do, the things are old and broken.

The temporary shelter they built is tattered. How can people live in that condition? In the doctors’ view, people shouldn’t live like this. Our doctors and pharmacists truly care about the patients in need there.

Their hearts really go out to them. Just now, when they talked about the health and well-being of patients there, they were still concerned about East Africa, the people they reached out, the things they saw and heard about, The whole environment, and so on; all are still vivid in their mind.

Over the period of two months, the first relief effort reported back was Malawi, because our volunteers in South Africa were informed about the need. Our volunteer, Mr. Pan, led several young volunteers and local volunteers of Malawi to the affected area.

They arrived the affected areas and saw some houses had collapsed, so, they purchased the building materials and built houses for affectees. That was the first relief effort we saw.

Then, in Zimbabwe, volunteers carried out relief efforts and held distributions. We saw Jessica Yang, our Da Ai TV reporter, at the affected areas, and we received many footages from there. During that time, every day, we witnessed people there in suffering. For many days, we witnessed the suffering there. Volunteers encourage affectees to give, and inspired people to donate coins.

Also, in Mozambique, for the past months, our volunteers and staff introduced to people Tzu Chi’s way of disaster relief, and comforted the affectees with love; they guided them with Tzu Chi’s values. Sure enough, the people there are very kindhearted. One after another, they became local volunteers. With their sincerity and experience, they helped us and gave of themselves wholeheartedly.

This time, the relief efforts there face a lot of hardship but there is a hope, a lot of hope, because volunteers have fostered the spirit that people in poverty can become people with blessings.

Moreover, Da Ai TV’s general manager Ms. Susan Yeh, also joined the relief team. Using her vacation days and on her own expenses, she went to assist relief work. We already had some staff from Da Ai TV there; Susan went to the affected areas, interviewed people, and took pictures. I saw that she was standing on the roof to set up a camera. Our documenting volunteers took a photo of her on the roof. This is really touching.

Reporters of Rhythms Monthly went as well. Looking at the photos they took and listening to the stories behind them, they are truly a work of art. These are all photos by Rhythms Monthly.

In the photos taken by Mr. Michael Xiao of Tzu Chi Monthly, we can see people there truly suffer so. A woman carries on her head relief goods whose size is several times bigger than that of her head while carrying a child on her back. I said from the photo we can see the suffering that’s being carried on this woman’s head. It’s heartrending to see such suffering life.

So, people who have been following this disaster relief effort must read the June issue of Rhythm Monthly and the May and June issues of Tzu Chi Monthly.

We see Tzu Chi volunteers’ compassionate vow in carrying out the relief efforts. The ground was covered with sandy soil. When it was wet, it was muddy. When it was dry, countless footprints could be seen on the sandy soil.

Those footsteps were left by volunteers; they look like lotus flowers. The relief effort was truly touching. In the future, I hope we can transform the lives of people in Africa. I hope we can bring blessings to that place. With everyone contributing what they can, we will be able to help the people in Africa.

I look forward to seeing people In suffering open their hearts, pave a spiritual path and walk Bodhisattva Path. We need to let people know about this disaster relief. We need to keep on sharing with people so they know about the suffering in Africa.

We know about the disaster and we have taken action to help. Since then, lotus flowers have grown out of volunteers’ footsteps. We hope lotus flowers can grow on that land. a land that will not be filled with  muddy soil, or sandy soil that is dusty and hard to walk on.

We hope the land can be transformed into a beautiful place full of blooming lotus flowers, bringing impact to the local people. This is our hope. If we do this, we can create a boundless merit.

Everyone, be mindful. This is Tzu Chi’s history and Tzu Chi’s Sutra treasure. Everyone must mindfully learn about this.
