20190905照破黑暗點心燈Bringing Light to the Less Fortunate

Our Tzu Chi members are truly living bodhisattvas. They all work very diligently, and though they live in different parts of the world, they share the same aspirations. This is also true of our Tzu Chi members who carried out our recent medical outreach in Laos. Some of them visited the Abode yesterday and shared their experiences about the medical outreach this time.

I keep mentioning that we must not forget Tzu Chi's history. We must spend a lot of time recalling the work we've carried out. Yesterday, they reported about how they'd conducted the medical outreach a few days ago in Laos, and we must not forget when and how they carried it out. They've lived out their aspiration, which is truly admirable.

There are scarce medical resources in Laos; hardware has worn out and there is an even greater lack of software and medicine. Witnessing the situation there, our Tzu Chi members all felt deeply for the patients. Also, with scare resources there, it was inconvenient and difficult for our Tzu Chi members to carry out the medical outreach. They've shared many stories about how they overcame all difficulties to provide medical care for more than 3,000 people.

I've also learned of a story from a Tzu Chi commissioner. She like everything to be clean and neat. During the medical outreach this time, when she touched patients with her hands, she gave rise to compassion, feeling deeply for the elderly and the poor. She personally cared for the patients even though they had a bad odor. She has learned to let go of her attachment. With compassion within, she naturally cares for the needy and treats everyone equally. This is a form of cultivation.

Because of the medical outreach, she will truly go amongst people to serve. When we see those in suffering, we will be inspired to harbor a bodhisattva heart. So, in going amongst people to serve, we may sometimes be inspired by them. When bringing aid to those in suffering, we weill be inspired to harbor a bodhisattva heart, care for the needy with compassion, and feel their suffering as our very own.

What this volunteer of our did was truly meritorious. She was inspired when caring for those in suffering, which was truly not an easy feat. In practicing the way of Bodhisattvas, we will encounter many kinds of external conditions and difficulties. When striving to overcome those difficulties, we can cultivate both love and patience and will be inspired to care for the needy. This is how we cultivate ourselves. Our medical outreach in Laos has inspired love in many people.

Indeed, we must help the needy whenever we have a chance to do so. As long as we go amongst people to serve, we will have more chances to reach those in suffering and offer them aid. This is how we serve as living bodhisattvas and go amongst people to brighten up the lives of the needy. Apart from Laos, we've also reached out to the needy in Cambodia recently.

I asked Mr. Tsai, who is an entrepreneur (and also a Tzu Chi volunteer,) to help children in Cambodia who couldn't study at nighttime due to the lack of electricity. He said that he'd go there with other volunteers and help solve the problem of power supply so that the children can also study at nighttime. There is much poverty in the place they visited, and people there can only survive with the food and necessities they find in a garbage mound.

With the company of other volunteers, Mr. Tsai visited door to door to help install solar-powered lights for to help install solar-powered-lights for those who had stayed in dark for long. Now, children there can study at nighttime without worries. This is our volunteers serve as living bodhisattvas and go amongst people to brighten up the lives of the needy.

May we all harbor gratitude to them. When those who are poor need medical care, our volunteer doctors, nurses, and pharmacists (will offer free clinics to them.) Many Tzu Chi volunteers, including those who are plumbing and electrical experts, will also pitch in to help so that the patients can be provided with good medical care.

Also, despite being an entrepreneur, Mr. Tsai is more than willing to bring aid to the needy. What he does is truly admirable and he is truly a living bodhisattva.
