20200217齋戒茹素唯上方 Adopting a Vegetarian Diet to End the Outbreak
Starting from Wuhan, China, the novel coronavirus has spread to 29 countries and regions where there are cases being confirmed. People are worried and anxious, because so far there is no drug to cure this disease. How to cure the disease? and what kind of drug can truly treat the disease? The best of prevention is to take good care of our own hearts and minds; we have to inspire people’s hearts.
We have lost our direction. We should stop where we are immediately, head toward the correct direction, and transform our hearts and minds. The life people led before was driven by desires, and people lost themselves in the pursuit of satisfying their cravings for meat; people then got ill from what they ate.
All animals have their own habitat. We humans should not invade their habitat. Vegetables can be cooked into dishes and be very testy. They can satisfy our appetite and are nutritious. By changing our mindset and with a correct thinking, we can coexist with the Earth and enjoy having grain crops as our food. Isn’t this nice?
But, being restless and unsettled in their hearts, people have lost their direction. Now, the only way to stop the virus from spreading is for us to be sincerely pious and abstain from eating meat. We should reflect ourselves right now, be sincerely pious, and abstain from eating meat. Following the precept of not killing, let us keep a vegetarian diet.
May everyone aspire with a heart of piety, and with a love that is sincere and the selfless, our prayers will resonate and reach all the Buddha’s and Bodhisattvas above. Let us express our sincerity, and piously pray for the current outbreak. Love can put an end to this disaster; only love can bring an end to it.
We know medical professionals on the frontline combating this outbreak with their lives and risking their lives; Let us pray for their safety as well as everyone’s safety. How can we help in this situation? This is a disaster, and with the spirit of humanitarianism, where there is a disaster, we will lend a helping hand; such is an unquestionable moral truth.
Giving aids in times of disaster Is what we are supposed to do. Not to mention that is in line with the Buddha’s teaching. What we can do is to devote ourselves in and alleviating suffering and helping with love. When we help others, we are saved as well.
We have been witnessing the love of Tzu Chi volunteers. In China, local Tzu Chi volunteers have been courageously yet cautiously serving and caring for others. Meanwhile, they continue to visit Tzu Chi’s care recipients; volunteers also share with them ways to prevent viral infections.
They deliver vegetarian food and soup to people at temperature screening points in the community; they show their care to medical professionals by sending ginger tea, hot soup, and multi grain instant mix.
I am truly grateful to them and was really moved; such are Tzu Chi volunteers serving as living bodhisattvas. The Buddha came to the world for the great purpose of teaching the way of Bodhisattvas; Bodhisattvas go amongst the people and alleviate their suffering. Seeing their deeds, I am truly moved.
It is the same in Singapore; presently, many cases have been confirmed there, so Tzu Chi volunteers there have been helping as well; they quickly set up a relief committee specifically for dealing with relief matters regarding the outbreak and to calm people’s hearts. That is what volunteers in Singapore are doing.
All in all, because there are living Bodhisattvas in our world at this time, wherever there is a need, they can answer to the need. Even volunteers living far away can provide aid from afar. Seeing this makes us truly touched.
So now, what we can do is harbor sincere piety and adopt a vegetarian diet. Moreover, only love can bring an end to this disaster and end this outbreak. For this outbreak, only love can end this epidemic disaster. We should praise and give encouragement to those who are helping with the situation.
Of course, we must be very cautious. We must believe in piety. Only with piety and only with everyone taking action to uphold precepts and adopt a vegetarian diet can the situation improve. May everyone aspire to stop killing and adopt a vegetarian diet with a heart of piety. This is sincere piety.
So, I hope people can develop faith as it can calm their minds, and set their minds on the Dharma. Why we need now is to have a calm mind and set our minds on the Dharma. With an upright mind and sincerity, evil will not get to us. In the past, I’ve said that Evil cannot get into a person who has an upright mind and a pure heart.
Everyone must adopt a vegetarian diet and have a correct mindset. If we don’t adopt a vegetarian diet and have a correct mindset, we don’t know how long this outbreak will last as the number of confirmed cases keeps on increasing. I truly hope people can adopt a vegetarian diet, have a correct mindset, and urge one another to do the same. This is a very serious outbreak.
