Because of the Chinese New year, the Abode is full of people’s warmth and the holiday spirit.
Yesterday, since the Volunteer morning Assembly, I began receiving New Year’s greeting via videoconference, including greetings from the Tzu Chi hospitals in Hualien, Dalin, and Taipei. Greetings via videoconference also came from Singapore and Japan. There were many volunteers in our KL-Selangor branch sending in their greetings, and it was quite impressive.
Also in Malaysia, there is Penang, where several groups of volunteers from different districts all showed up, and volunteers of all ages gave their greetings. It seems like they are of one heart, displaying such beauty of sincerity, and it was beautiful. It was the same for Singapore, what they have mindfully presented was being in unity and harmony with love. It was very beautiful.
In Australia, they began by putting my worries at ease.
We’re grateful to Master and Tzu Chi volunteers worldwide for caring about the fire disaster in Australia. After months of burning, because of the heavy rain in recent days, the situation of bushfires has been stabilized. However, before the summer ends in Australia, we still need to heighten our vigilance and pay close attention to this matter.
Disaster relief and distributions are being carried out quite orderly; we give affectees our comfort and support and firefighters our gratitude. We’ll work on quickly recruiting more volunteers by talking about Tzu Chi and doing Tzu Chi work, meanwhile, continue to promote vegetarianism and environmental protection. We’ll respect Mother Nature and purity our hearts.
Recently, every day, I am concerned with the fires in Australia, which have been raging on for months. During the videoconference, volunteers said, although the fires are still burning, they will encourage people to adopt and promote a vegetarian diet.
There are not many Tzu Chi volunteers in Australia, they have come to realize what I often said to them, “Australia is a really big country and there are only a few Tzu Chi volunteers there. Everyone, we should start inspiring local people to join us. With sincerity, everyone has to stay vigilant and pray piously.”
This time, they not only realize this, but also put my teachings into practice. They carry donation boxes to fundraise on streets. They talk to people about the emergency of the devastating bushfire disaster and ask people to donate with love, urge them to be vigilant, and pray with sincere piety.
They go around their local communities to remind people of this disaster and to be sincerely pious. Meanwhile, they encourage people to adopt vegetarianism and stop eating meat. Climate change has been a truly urgent problem now. Wildfires occur and forests are burning. The condition of climate change is truly alarming. Tzu Chi volunteers have fundraised on streets and interacted with people.
Inspiring people to donate a little bit of money each day to help people in need was how Tzu Chi started. By donating a little every day, we can help people. The dry and hot land just need drops after drops of water; these drops can nourish the land. Once the land becomes wet and moist, it will enable the seeds to grow.
Mother Earth can sustain lives continuously by providing boundless supply of all kinds of crops and grains and trees that benefit the world and provide clean air. All these are benefits which Mother Earth gives us, so we humans must not destroy them. Let Mother Nature runs its course and it will protect our lives. To have a favorable weather and balanced climate, we need to keep the air clean as well as purify people’s hearts.
I saw volunteers giving their Chinese New Year greetings. Volunteers from around Taiwan have reaffirmed their aspirations and renewed their vows, one place after the other. See volunteers in Tainan, they are very orderly and dignified. They are united as one in heart. Suddenly, as people move, the formation shows a big circle with squares inside. The circle moves as people walk, symbolizing the turning of the Dharma wheel. The circle moves while the squares stay in place.
They all have the same center. As the center stays in place, people around it won’t go out of track, and the circle can keep moving. As long as people unite their hearts together and work together in harmony with love, no matter how the formation changes, people’s hearts remain united.
All in all, formation can be formed with a large group of people. When there’s goodness, formation can be formed. When there’s evil, things are scattered. When there’s goodness, the shape formed follows principles. When there’s evil, things don’t follow principles, so, they appear chaotic.
All in all, as we celebrate the Chinese New Year, no matter where we are, we have to harbor a genuine, sincere heart and work together in unity and harmony with love. This is how we should conduct ourselves all the time. Volunteers also work together to form moving wheels of large and small. Volunteers of all ages can turn the wheels. See, such are living bodhisattvas. With a change of perspective at our will, we can transform our karma. Our hearts can do this.
Everyone, people are naturally self-disciplined and follow rules. It’s just that people’s hearts are out of harmony so they don’t follow rules and principles. Tzu Chi volunteers consciously adjust themselves to rules and principles. No matter how they follow one another and hold hands, they never leave the essence of our Dharma lineage. That’s how they form all those beautiful formations with principles.
Everyone, do not underestimate the power of love. When truth, goodness, and beauty are forever in our hearts and actions and in people’s hearts, climate will gradually return to balance and the world will be safe and peaceful.
