Subject: Tzu Chi's Recycling Station: A Place of Spiritual Cultivation 環保福地為道場
“Hello! Master.”
“How are you?”
“How’s your health?”
“I’m healthy. I’m 86 years old.”
“Do you come here every day?”
“Yes.”
Amituofo (阿彌陀佛).
Elderly bodhisattvas, you are here doing recycling work, too.
“Are you all very happy doing the work?”
“Yes, we’re happy.”
“Did you all rest after lunch?”
“Yes.”
“I’m very grateful to you all.”
“Did you use your own money to buy things for everyone to use?”
“Yes.”
“That’s admirable.”
Early this morning, after 7 a.m, I set out to visit our recycling stations.
All the recycling stations that I went to were place of blessings.
Many recycling stations were very large.
As I walked around I said: “This place is so big.”
Yet, your place here is different.
Your recycling station is small yet beautiful. Small and beautiful.
Even the walls have signs so people know, how to sort out the recyclables in a very clean and neat way.
This place is truly small but beautiful.
Yet, you volunteers make big use of this place.
I heard that you hold gatherings and study group here, so everyone can come to learn about Tzu Chi’s ideals and spirit.
This is a place where Dharma is spoken.
Dharma is not limited to the teachings that I speak in my talks.
True Dharma can be found in the experience of interacting with others.
During our lives, what experiences have we encountered, and how do we wake up from them and transform ourselves? These are all called Dharma.
(法，不是說師父在講經，這樣才叫說法，不是，真正的法，是人與人之間，人的經驗，在過去人生，我們接觸到什麼樣的環境，怎樣覺悟，如何改變，這些都叫做法。)
An important effect of Dharma is creating harmony among people in a family, if all the family members are united and in harmony, then this family will be happy family.
So, when a family is in harmony, everything will go well.
(這個法最重要的，就是人與人之間，要怎樣能夠合，要怎麼合，從一個家庭開始，心若合，氣若和，這個家庭就能很圓滿。所以家和萬事興)
Since we all have the karmic affinity to be together and join Tzu Chi, now that we’rein Tzu Chi, we should learn more about Tzu Chi and it’ spirit. This is leaning Dharma.
(我們大家有緣在一起，認識慈濟之後，我們就盡量了解慈濟，它的內涵是什麼，就聽法了)
“Do you all watch Da Ai TV everyday?”
“Yes”
“Do you listen to my broadcasted talks?”
“Yes”
“After listening to the talks, do you feel the practice I describe is doable?“
“Yes”
The teachings I give are very simple.
If you have the will, you’ll be able to live them out.
Some teachings are deeper, and you may feel you want to wait on learning them which is all right.
But please be aware that life is very impermanent.
(相信師父說的話都很簡單，有心要做，做得到，也還有很多很深的會覺得，師父，讓我慢慢來，我也說，沒關係，但是人生無常喔)
You can listen to the teachings and just keep them in your heart.
Then,when the teaching becomes handy, you can readily use it.
This is a form of “recycling”, too.
(總而言之，聽到的好話，我們放在心底，遇到什麼事情，趕緊拿起來用，這也是叫做資源回收)
When you make use of my teachings, the teachings become valuable.
But if you don’t use the teachings at all, then they are like garbage that’s thrown out.
(師父說的法，用在心裡，這叫做寶，我如果說完以後，你們都不用，這就像垃圾一樣，把它丟掉了)
So, I really hope that everyone can take in the teachings.
Then, when a bag situation arises, the teaching can help you.
If people make use of the teachings, then they will care for one another and there’d be less petty arguments.
(所以我也很期待，人人把法放在心裡，遇到事情時，我們就能用，所以如果多用，我們就能懂得互愛)
Otherwise,look how we are now blocking the street right now.
Normally,the neighbors would complain by now.
But, here, the neighbors are all understanding.
That’s because you’ve already formed good relations with everyone here by being kind and considerate to others.
So,today, despite the inconvenience we’ve caused they can be understanding.
Most importantly, we need to care for our planet by doing recycling.
Areyou all happy doing recycling here? Are your hearts open and broad? (Yes)
That means you’re full of joy. (開闊 叫做開心)
The recycling work makes you very happy and you get exercise.
So, being happy and getting exercise, that means you’re healthy.
Can you elder bodhisattvas understand what I say? (Yes)
I’m very grateful to you recycling volunteers.
To me,I fell that recycling volunteers like you are very important, because on our planet, the Four Elements are in disequilibrium, causing disasters.
So, weare really need to keepa heart of piety and vigilance.
If everyoneis very pious and does good, then with tens of thousands of hands working to protect the planet, our planet will become more healthy.
Recycling work can help the Four Elements to become balances again.
(真的很感恩，環保菩薩對我而言，是很重要的，因為地球一直受四大，地、水、火、風(影響)，師父要對大家說，我們要戒慎虔誠，大家很虔誠，懂得造福，這樣千手、萬萬手，願意去付出，能夠相信說，環保能夠保護大地，環保能夠使四大能協調，能夠調和)
We need people worldwide to do this, not only u s in Taiwan.
But you recycling volunteers in Taiwan set an example for others and inspireand educate people with your actions with out needing to say much.
Hence,I hoe that our Tzu Chi recycling stations can bring recycling volunteers together for them to do recycling work.
They can also share their thoughts and feelings with others.
By listening to other people’s life experiences, we can then reflect on our own situation and realize, for example, that our family situation is actually not so bad.
So, in no time, people in our family can live in harmony.
If every family can be like this, then entire street block, the entire community,will be peaceful and harmonious too.
So,everyone, our recycling station is a place of cultivation(環保站是道場).
As I entered, I saw that the entire place is very clean.
Also,the recyclables to be disassembled have been separated by category.
When a sticker on a plastic bag can’t be removed, you even cut it out to raise the quality of the recycled plastic.
So, if all of us can try to separate out the differing materials, it’ll raise thevalue of the recyclable.
It’s the same when it comes to our character.
If we still have some impurities in our hearts (人品典範), it is like the sticker on the plastic.
If we can remove that “sticker” (that impurity) by getting rid of our bad habits, we can be person with good character, too.
So,everyone, I’m grateful that we have such a large place of cultivation.
We are truly blessed.
Since we have such a blessed site for recycling, do be more mindful in your recycling work.

They went o Israel to learn more about how people use water there.
Because water is essential for survival and Israel is a country that faces water shortage, they went to learn how Israelis conserve water.

It can broaden your horizon. (眼界更加開濶)
Our TV program are the same.
Not only do they brings us reports from other countries, they also broadcast Tzu Chi work being done around the world.
So,people in many counters can see how our recycling volunteers are working to protect the planet.
And,because of your contributions, which also go to fund Da Ai TV.
Da Ai TV can broadcast worldwide.
So, I’m very grateful that we are able to broadcast wholesome values around the world.(清流繞全球)
