20130905大同世界一家親Bringing Hope and Love to Those in Need

Take a bow. South Africa is so far away from Taiwan. South Africa is so far away from Taiwan. The flight plus transfers take 16 hours. After such a long flight, I’m really dizzy. Dizzy indeed. After we go back, we’ll study hard and share the truth, goodness, and beauty of Tzu Chi with all our classmates.

When we grow up, we want to be Tzu Chi volunteers to repay the love of Grandmaster and Tzu Chi aunties and uncles. Hi, everyone we’re back. We’re here to learn Chinese.

The two girls we see are from South Africa. When they first came to Taiwan ten years ago, they were still in elementary school. But now, they’re going to college. One of them wishes to become a nurse. That’s her aspiration and her plan for her life.

As long as they’re heading in the right direction, we’ll be more than happy to support and nurture them so they can become useful members of society in the future.

Apart from imparting knowledge in them, we all the more hope that they can grow in wisdom. It’s not enough to just learn knowledge as those who are knowledgeable and clever may not necessarily make use of their knowledge to do good. It is said that cleverness may overreach itself.

But those who have wisdom will not go astray because they know clearly which path to take in life. They have self-respect and they’ll steadfastly work to benefit others as that’s their purpose in life.

Seeing how much they’ve grown, I’m truly very happy. We also see our volunteers in Indonesia. We also see our volunteers in Indonesia giving out tickets to the needy to collect rice. Before, our volunteer had to carry bags of rice to families in need.

Now, they give them tickets for them to collect the rice themselves. This time, more than 1,800 families have received the rice. Seeing how our volunteers in Indonesia have been providing love and care to the needy like this, I’m very comforted.

We also see Thailand. The chief of Ratchaburi public health in Thailand, Dr. Boonriang Chuchaisangrat, is our Tzu Chi volunteer--- He is a certified Tzu Cheng member. When he came to Taiwan in 2011, he didn’t reveal his identity and humbly volunteered at our hospital in Hualien.

After that, he continued to stay at the Abode. One day, he told me that he had to go back to Thailand to take care of something. It was then that I learned he was a chief of public health in Thailand. He has been very dedicated to Tuz Chi’s work.

After from sharing, Tzu Chi’s medical culture with local hospitals, he often takes part in our free clinics, brings care to those in need, etc. Two years ago, our volunteers in Thailand began taking care of a grandma, who is now 80 years old. She lives all by herself and used to scavenge to make a living.

One time, her right foot was pricked by a nail, and the wound kept festering because she has diabetes. Eventually, her right leg had to be amputated. We can imagine how hard life is for her with no one to care for her.

So, after she became our care recipient, our volunteers have been caring for her regularly, helping to clean her house, etc. Dr. Chuchaisangrat also visits her as he is our Tzu Cheng member. See how he even helped clean her bedpan. It’s very touching to see.

When he saw how dispirited she was, he examined her carefully and found that she had the flu. So, he fed her some food to make her feel better. It’s also very touching to see how a group of college students made the grandma laugh by giving her kisses and hugs.

They truly made her very happy. Learning that the grandma lost her eyesight due to cataracts in both eyes, our volunteers helped arrange for her to receive eye surgery and bathed her before driving her to the hospital.

The medical staff of the hospital understood that the grandma is our care recipient, so they were so considerate that they decided to operate on both her eyes at one time instead of performing two separate operations, which will take more time.

See how Tzu Chi volunteers took turns taking care of her day and night. Several nurses of the hospital also cared for her very mindfully. So now, she is able to see again. See how our world is filled with so much warmth. All this is made possible by love. Who but bodhisattvas would be able to achieve this?

The world is filled with warmth and love because there are living bodhisattvas whose acts of love have helped beautify our society. It’s truly very touching.

There are so many touching stories to share. See how our U.S. volunteers were promoting filial piety and vegetarianism. They also went a nursing home. It was very heartwarming to see.

Be it in well-to-do countries like the U.S., impoverished countries, or countries with wide wealth disparity, there are Tzu Chi volunteers serving as living bodhisattvas everywhere. How beautiful our world is. All in all, there are many touching stories to tell every day.

But, there are also many disasters around the world, so we should be aware and prudent at all times. We should also work hard to bring peace to people’s minds and inspire more living bodhisattvas. This is what we must make great vows to do so our society can enjoy peace and safety.
