20131123悲心平等最吉祥 Serving with Equal Compassion for All

I am truly very grateful. The reports I heard from you show the unity of our hospital. Doctors from various departments work together to care for the same patient. This is very important. Nowadays, medicine is divided into many different specialties.

That’s why there are so many departments. Some patients come in the morning to see three to five doctors for their illness. This is very difficult and tiring for elderly patients who have to go from one department to another.

Yet, in our hospital, we offer a combined consultation service so elderly patients can come and see three doctors of different specialties all in one appointment. That’s how attentive we are to patients.

No matter how advanced medicine and medical equipment maybe, in order for patients to find answers to their health issues, they have to go to different specialists, which uses up a lot of time. Nowadays, we are facing aging world populations. So, many senior citizens lived by themselves, and their children live far away.

So, we try to provide services that make it easier for the elderly and offers better medical care. While medical devices become more advanced, our medical skills also improve. So, hearing how Dr. Ooi makes tiny incisions in minimal invasive surgery to reduce patients’ pain after surgery, this is what makes me most grateful and what I wish for most.

Truly, we are continuing to improve ourselves. Here, our Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital is young, energetic, bright and innovative. I truly wish we can work toward upgrading our hospital accreditation. We really look forward to that. We also heard Chinese and
Western medicine working together.

See, everything in Nature can be ingredients for medicine. Even things considered useless can have their use and be utilized to their maximum value. For example, we can put dried fruit peels in bags and use them as potpourris in restrooms to freshen up the place. You see how we cherish goods. Everything in this world has its uses and natural laws. I am truly very touched.

We also saw our nurses, whom I call “Saints in White”. We should know that the Saint in White refers to the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who is in fact a Buddha named “He Who Understands the True Dharma”, but people portray him as a female figure in the form of the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

That’s because females have an innate motherly nature which is very tender and gentle. That’s why people portray him as a female. But, actually, having already attained enlightenment as a Buddha, he is a great being and “great being” or “da-shi” in Chinese, encompasses both male and female. Da-Shi means bodhisattva.

For a bodhisattva to become a Buddha, he needs to walk the Bodhisattva Path. Life is the most precious thing in the world. All of you doctors and nurses have the power to save lives. Every day, you encounter patients in great need. They need you to reach out to them.

By putting your thoughts into it, you can relieve their suffering quickly and give comfort and support, which puts their minds at ease, and takes away their pain and misery. Also, from our nursing report, we saw how caring our nurses are toward elderly patients.

The way our nurses interact with these senior citizens is like granddaughters with their grandparents. This makes our hospital fell very much like home. This is truly our most valuable service.

I also heard that many doctors see patients at their clinic till midnight. How hard they have worked. I am very moved to see our nurses serving without complaints and working seamlessly together. Our doctors and nurses also work together and support one another in providing service.

This is our unique feature. I am grateful to all of you for being here from morning till now.
Visiting our Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, I find everything radiant and young and everyone is working so well together. I feel very hopeful for our future endeavors. So, unity, harmony, mutual love and teamwork are good to remember when working together.

This is also a prescription from me to you. For the spirit of unity, “A heart of equal compassion for all is most auspicious”. Unity is most auspicious and all of you have equal compassion for all, no matter if the patient has money or not, or is young or old.

Since they have come to our hospital, we care for them with a heart of equality. We are of one mind in this because our purpose in medicine is to relieve pain and suffering. So, such compassion and love is given to all equally. Such solidarity is most auspicious.

The spirit of harmony is: “Having a big, open heart and vast vows” brings the greatest blessings.” If we have a big, open heart, that means being magnanimous and being free from pettiness. That brings blessings. We often say, “Harbor a broad heart and wholesome thoughts” that is being magnanimous.

That brings blessings and creates harmony. Because we can always be harmonious with one another and our hearts are open, our nerves would not get stepped on so easily and we would not get into conflicts with others. Being harmonious, we will have a big, open heart and wholesome thoughts. Then, we are the most blessed.

The spirit of mutual love comes from a genuine heart, full of truth, goodness and beauty. All of you in our hospital serve with selfless love for all. You do it sincerely so your heart is at peace. “A heart of genuine and boundless love brings greatest peace”.

When we have true inner peace, even if the work is exhausting, we still feel very at peace and at ease. In cultivation, we also aim to develop that capacity for peace and inner ease. How to go about it? By working as a team. Teamwork is uniting and giving unconditionally.

It is about working together and being a team such as doctors of several departments seeing a patient together so the elderly patient does not have to have many separate consultations. This is teamwork. It comes from solidarity. It is to give without seeking anything in return.

Doing that, we are most at ease. So, having peace and ease comes from loving one another and working as a team. Mutual love brings peace; teamwork makes us most at ease; unity is auspicious; harmony brings the greatest blessings.

In the hospital, may you all have unity, harmony, mutual love and teamwork. With such an energy of love, you will have abundant energy and strength to relieve suffering and saves.
