20131220堅定不移道可成Love Brings About a Beautiful World

“The New Year is coming. Master Cheng Yen asks us to bring you some gifts, like rice, noodles, cooking oil. Are you happy?” “Yes” “We brought you a comforter, a coat, cooking oil, salts and socks. Are you happy?” “Of course! You even brought us socks.” “Nice and warm?” “Yes, it’s light and warm.” “You’ve never worn anything like this” “Never?” “No, never”

“Please use the comforter and wear the coat. Don’t store them away, okay?”
“We’ve never had such a nice comforter before.”

During wintertime, see how Tzu Chi volunteers in China bring warmth to the needy living in freezing cold places. There are now more young local volunteers taking part in our work in China. Like Tzu Chi volunteers, they serve others very respectfully and care for the elderly as if they were their own parents.

If the supplies they’d given out were too heavy for the elderly, they would help carry them to their homes and supported the elderly along the way as they walked side by side. It is truly very beautiful. By doing good with a genuine heart, we can bring about a beautiful world. In many different provinces of China, we’ve seen the same images of warmth and love.

All this is made possible by the love in our hearts. When we give with love, we bring warmth to the world. In the U.S. our volunteers in Northern California also prepared hot meals and material supplies for the homeless to help keep them warm. Our volunteers also went to a homeless shelter to prepare sleeping mats and dinners for the people there. See, there’s much warmth in the world.

We also see the flooding that had affected Malaysia since early December. Apart from Tzu Chi volunteers, staff from our office in Penang also used their free time to take part in our relief work.
A nurse from our dialysis center in Penang also went with our group of volunteers to bring aid and care to those affected. He even encouraged them to give what they could to help others. This is the most beautiful part of humanity, which is very touching to see.

Indeed, this is how people should care for one another. If everyone can do so, even though there are disasters, people will recover soon. When people’s hearts are comforted, they’ll be able to get back on their feet and steadily walk toward recovery. This is how people should help one another.

We also see Mr. Jack Gaisano in Philippines, whose act of love is very touching. His family owns a chain of department stores and supermarkets in the Philippines. He has been a Tzu Chi volunteer for years, and is a certified Tzu Cheng member.

All across the Philippines, his family owns over 40 stores. Originally, he planned to open a new supermarket in Tacloban, and it was ready to be opened. “His supermarket was scheduled to be opened on Nov 9. But Typhoon Haiyan hit on Nov 8 and his supermarket was cleaned out by looters. We told him to think of it as charity” And that’s what he did, although he’d suffered great losses. The supermarket was very big and ready to be opened.

So, it was stocked with plentiful goods. But the typhoon hit and the supermarket was looted. However, he didn’t complain at all. He shifted his perspective, got over it, and regarded it as charity. He dedicated himself to our relief work and provided whatever supplies we needed. He also took his staff in Cebu to Tacloban to help with our work there. He is truly a bodhisattva.

He didn’t get frustrated over his losses but did all he should to help with our relief work. He just did what was right with a peaceful heart and provided supplies to typhoon survivors and our volunteers every day. He even served as our documenting volunteer to record our work in Tacloban. That’s how he gave of his love, which is truly remarkable and praiseworthy.

We also see one of our volunteers in Fujian, China. Although she is illiterate, she is very dedicated to Tzu Chi’s work. She cannot read or write, but she knows where life’s values lies. She listens to my Dharma talks and does recycling every day. See how diligent she is. She also serves as our culinary volunteer and everyone loves her cooking.

So, among our volunteers, some have more resources and can therefore help more people, and some are not materially wealthy, but they do what they can to help others. All of them are bodhisattvas and our role models. If everyone can look up to them and follow their examples, our society will enjoy peace and safety.

In this world, there are many natural and manmade disasters. So, those who are safe and well should reach out to those affected by disasters and people in need and bring them warmth and love. This way, their suffering will be alleviated, and those who give will gain spiritual wealth and inner joy. This is how we can do good to benefit humanity, making our world more beautiful.

The power of love comes from people. When we do all we can to give with love, we can bring about a beautiful world. By that, I don’t mean beautiful sceneries, but a beautiful life. That’s most important. So, please be mindful always.
