Within each of our hearts, there is a clean and pure wellspring. It is inherent in every one of us. But, for some reason, we are unable to fin this wellspring. That’s why the field of our mind is always dry. So, we need to find the wellspring. When we find it, we need to work hard to dig for it. If we give up just as we’re about to tap into the wellspring, the water will not come out. So, we need to continue our effort. Perhaps, the wellspring is just blocked by a rock. If we can move the rock away, clear water will spring forth to cleanse away the impurities from our mind.
The Boy Who Found the Wellpring
Let me tell you story. Once, there was a village suffering from drought. So, many villagers were digging for water and had dug very deep. A boy was also there to help out. But after digging for a long time, there was still no water. So, the villagers decided that it was useless to continue. But the boy thought that since they had been digging for so many days, it’d be a it to give up.
However, the villagers were all worn-out and very frustrated, so they all left. Then, the boy went into a pit. He kept digging and digging until he saw a piece of rock. The rock was very heavy, but everyone had left. As a child, he was not able to remove the rock by himself. He was very tried, so he lay down on the rock to rest.
As he was about to fall asleep, he seemed to hear a sound coming from underground. He listened to it carefully. It seemed to be the sound of flowing water. So, he started to dig again. For six days and nights, he stayed in the pit to dig. Eventually, the rock became loose and the boy gave it a hard push. Once the rock was shifted aside, water began oozing out. The boy was very happy, but he was so exhausted that he fainted. The water kept flowing out. Soon, the boy was half immersed. The villagers had come out to look for the boy. But they did not know that he was in the pit.
Just then, the boy came to and started calling out: “There’s water here!” The villagers heard him and followed his voice to the pit. They saw water in the pit, but the boy had fainted again. The villagers quickly got the boy out of the pit. They realized that the boy had spent six days digging in the pit and moved the rock away to let the water issue forth. He had saved the entire village.
This is just a story. At first, everyone wanted to dig for water. They were getting close, but they got frustrated and left. However, the boy persevered with effort. Although the villagers had given up, he continued to dig, and was able to find the wellspring eventually. We should all look up to the boy. We must be mindful. If we are, we will be able to hear the wellspring in our heart. So, we must have faith. We lose faith because we have not used the right method. If we apply the right method and have faith, with some effort, we will be able to find the wellspring in our heart. And if we continued to tap into it, clear water will spring forth and cleanse away all the impurities from our mind.
Our mind is just like a mirror. It needs to be cleaned and wiped. If we can wipe it clean and clear, it will be able to reflect everything that comes before it. So, we need to diligently dig for our wellspring within as well as wipe the mirror of our mind clean. Only then can the mirror of our mind become clear.
Otherwise, we will have afflictions. In fact, all our afflictions come from ourselves. We ourselves create the problems we face in our daily living with other people. We ourselves shut off our mind to others. We hinder ourselves to take in wholesome teachings. That’s how we unknowingly accumulate more and more afflictions. If we have afflictions in our minds, we must repent to cleanse our mind. This is what we must work hard to do. Just like how the boy pushed away the rock that blocked the water, when the rock is removed from our mind, clear water will issue forth to cleanse away the impurities in our mind. Then, our mind will become simple and pure and we won’t be troubled by unfavorable circumstances or interpersonal problems.
We must have a simple and pure heart like the boy who removed the rock. I often speak of the need to purify our mind. To do that, we must tap into the wellspring within to cleanse away the impurities in our mind. Then, the mirror of our mind will become clean and be able to clearly reflect everything. All this depends on our mind. All of us inherently have a wellspring within. When we move away the rock that blocks it, clear water will flow out to cleanse our mind and everything will become clear to us.
