We see that Tzu Chi’s housing projects in the Philippines are slowly making progress. Almost everyone, including children, in a village came to give a helping hand. With so many people working together, all the houses should be completed soon. Once all the houses are built and people move into their new homes, it’s time for us to share wholesome values with them so their body and mind can both be well cared for.
We paid the locals to help with our housing projects so they can make a living to support their families. Apart from that, we also hope to inspire them to work harder and be more diligent. We want them to understand that they have the capability to work, and hard work pays off. This is what we hope they can understand. Indeed, guiding people is no easy job.
But to practice the Six Paramitas, we need to go among people to serve. Through serving, we can not only benefit others, but also learn life’s truths. This is because, due to the karma they’d created, everyone’s life is different. That said, everyone’s original nature is the same. Every one of us has the same enlightened true nature within. To awaken our true nature, we need to go to the suffering.
Seeing how others suffer, we’ll learn to count our blessings. On the news, we see how a little girl in Ukraine dropped to the floor as a blast hit. See how children there have learned to do this in order to survive. A woman said that even her four-year-old grandson can tell which weapon is shooting by its sound. The people there truly lead a very unstable life and everyone is anxious and frightened.
Many people have taken to makeshift bomb shelters to escape shelling. They’ve truly suffered a lot. We also see children who are more blessed and fortunate. Here in Taiwan, we see a three-year-old boy who does recycling with his grandma at one of our recycling stations.
Do you like the volunteers here? Yes. Who? They like me, so I like them, too.

He is indeed very kind and loving. Since two years old, he has been doing recycling with his grandmother and learned to do many things. By taking him to our recycling station, his grandma can not only care for him, but also give him a wholesome environment to learn correct values. This is indeed very important.
We also see Je Hoong in Malacca, Malaysia, who has been very steadfast in doing recycling. Some of our adult volunteers quit doing recycling after some time. But see how persistent Je Hoong is.

People call us scavengers, garbage worms, etc. But we’re more than happy to make our community cleaner.
They do what they should do and are very happy doing it. When someone saw them collecting recyclables, he filmed them with his cell phone and posted the video clip on Facebook. The word spread quickly and even a local newspaper wan a story about them. They are truly “the little warriors of the environment” See, they are very young, but despite having been mocked at, they continue to do what’s right.
So, it’s important to create a wholesome environment for children so we can show them why they shouldn’t waste time just having fun, but should seize their free time to give and do recycling work. When we see people give with love like this, we need to affirm and praise their efforts.
Nowadays, social media, such as Facebook, is truly very powerful. When we post a negative comment, we curse numerous people. But when we post a positive piece of news, we can greatly encourage those who are doing good, such as Je Hoong and his friends. So, we need to use modern technology wisely in order to create a wholesome environment. This is very important.
Seeing the children in Ukraine, our hearts go out to them. All they know is conflicts and fighting. How can people live in a war-torn country like this? But in other parts of the world where society is peaceful, children can lead a happy life and even do recycling to help protect the Earth. When people learn to do all that is good, our will be peaceful and harmonious world. Seeing children who’ve learned to give, I can’t praise them enough. They are really very blessed. All this is made possible through time.
