20141021人人慈善齊造福Bringing Love and Warmth to Those in Need

He lived at a chicken stall in a market. It’s not a proper place to live. It was not convenient for him to use the restroom either.

After we helped move him to a nursing home, his health has improved a lot. When we visit him, he even says “Amitofo” to us. He’s very happy. In this world, as long as there are people with love, the suffering will have the chance to better their lives.

Take for example an elderly lady in Malaysia. She is almost 80 years old. Her husband loved to gamble and had given away three of their sons and two of their daughters for money. Although she still had four sons, three of them had passed away and the only son left couldn’t get along with her. Her daughter and her daughter’s fiance live close to her.

They invited her to move in with them, but she refused because she didn’t want to become their burden. She leads a hard life and she scavenges for a living. More than a year ago, her house caught fire. Almost everything was burned down, so there was no water and power. But she still lives there. Being informed of her condition, Tzu Chi volunteers took our trainee volunteers to visit her and see how they could help.

starting last month, our volunteers worked with her daughter’s fiance to help repair her house and they completed it in less than two months. After helping her, one of our trainee volunteers said this experience has helped him understand that he has chosen the right path to walk He has learned to count his blessings and realized that everyone can help others and that as long as people can care for one another and give of themselves with love, those in need can be helped.

Through taking action to help others, he’s felt the power of love and the happiness gained from serving. We often hear people say that giving brings more joy than receiving and helping others makes one happy. In fact, this is also what the Buddha teaches us to help one another and give with love.

We also see Indonesia. As few days ago, our medical volunteers worked with the Indonesian army to hold a free clinic in Padang. See how they gave with love. With a loving heart, our volunteers have worked with the military to help those in need of medical care. They not only operated on children with cleft lip, but also people with cataracts to help restore their vision so they can work to make a living again. Such is the power of love.

Indeed, when we give rise to love, we can help many people in need. In the Philippines, our volunteers have been holding rice distributions in different places lately. On Oct. 11, they distributed rice to nearly 1,000 households in Caloocan City. One of the locals who came to receive the rice was Armel He brought a heavy coin bank with him and said that his father had told him to save coins in there to donate to Tzu Chi.

It turned out that in 2011, our medical volunteers helped perform surgery to remove his father’s cataracts. Being poor, his father had also received our rice. At the time, our volunteers gave him a coin bank. Since then, he’d been putting coins in there to donate to Tzu Chi he told Arnel to keep saving and donate the money to Tzu Chi. Even though Arnel is also poor, he does keep saving coins in the bank in order to help those worse off than him.

I’m very grateful to Tzu Chi Foundation for giving my father a free cataract surgery I’ll never forget that. In the future, if Tzu Chi needs anything, I’ll do my best to help

Arnel has kept his father’s words in mind and brought the coin bank he’s been saving up to our volunteers He also told our volunteers that he’ll pass on the practice to his children He said he puts money in the bank every day and he’ll ask his children to do the same He does what his father told him to do and will pass on the practice to his children.

Although he is poor and has to receive rice from us, he still fives to help others and will teach his children to do the same. We also see Malaysia. As Deepavali, which marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year, is approaching, Tzu Chi volunteers in Malaysia invited our Hindu care recipients living in Malaysia to have a reunion meal and to celebrate this major festival together.

It truly felt like our Chinese New Year. By holding the event, our volunteers hoped that Hindus could enjoy the festivity of Deepavali. It’s just like our reunion meals on Chinese New Year’s Eve. It was truly very heartwarming. Seeing that, I’m very grateful. Our volunteers really love and care for everyone like family. Such selfless love is very endearing.

Indeed, we need to help and care for one another with love so our society can be more peaceful and our future generations be inspired to give with love as well
