Firstly, thank you, Master, for setting up the third cardiac catheterization lab. Now our team has more capacity to help more patients. In a few more days, our team will complete the operation and we’ll have saved 1,000 legs from being amputated. It shows the team effort through sweat and tears. One thousand legs saved also represent a significant milestone.
Treating peripheral vascular disorder is often lonely and sometimes physically demanding because surgeries are very lengthy. In one operation, Dr, Wu and I put on lead aprons and entered the operating room at 8 a.m. and by the time were done, it was already 10:30 p.m. The entire operation exceeded 12 hours!
With such long working hours, my health began to deteriorate last year. For more than 20 years, having to wear lead aprons in operations had led to problems with my neck and spine. Having to stand for long hours in the day and be on call in the night…. With any ER calls, I’d have to return to the hospital immediately to saves lives. My family and I always have arguments about my job.
They want me to quit my job immediately. But I can’t because there are those on the team who work harder, who are tired than me, yet still unwaveringly committed to their posts, such as our Dept. head, Dr. Huang Hsuan Li, and Dr. Wu Tien Yu. Dr. Wu frequently works long hours into the night. By evening, he could not withstand the weight of the lead apron and had to crouch down to continue the operation.
It is the same with Dr. Huang. He is always thinking about how to develop the team and let us be connected to the international medical community. He also suffers neck pain as I do to the point that he often can’t sleep at all. He also works hard to point that he is too tired to stand. But he continues to do everything he can to enrich and develop our team.
Today, standing here, I can proudly say to Master that our team did not disappoint you.
The peripheral vascular team led by Dr. Huang is an outstanding group. Doctors from Taiwan and abroad often come to our center to learn. Our team hasn’t let you down. For as long as we are still standing, we will persevere and uphold our commitment, the commitment to serve those in need.
From this Radiation Technologist’s report, they will soon reach the of saving 1,000 legs. Such is their love and mindful dedication. This is truly very touching That is why I always say I really respect doctors and am grateful to them. Look at how hard they have to work I keep wishing for a better lead apron, but that wish has not yet become a reality. Surgeons have to wear very heavy lead aprons. i once visited a surgery room picked one up. It made my heart go out to the surgeons deeply.
That lead apron is truly very heavy I am still trying to find them a better protective apron. If the new material can made into an apron, I believe it will be easier on the surgeons to wear a lighter apron. This is what I have been working hard on because I truly feel for them for having to wear the heavy lead apron for so many hours in surgery. Seeing how severe the blockage the blood vessel is, I can imagine how surgeons had to spend long hours with their full attention and in the same posture to complete the operation. I truly admire them.
I am also very moved by their dedication I think, with everyone sincerely working with one another, praising each other, and having such a close bond, this must be a very good medical team. Of course, the work is hard and tiring. However, you have saved many patients’ lives. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, and other medical professionals in the entire medical team all have to work hard to save patients.
Take heart transplants, for example. You see, with a high risk of transplant rejection, it is challenging to save the patient’s life. Moreover, to save a heart patient requires a large team of specialists from seven or eight fields. This team has to personally transport the harvested heart back and transplant the heart for patient.
Doctors reported how they saved a special case with a high risk of rejection. Because of the medical team’s earnest sincerity in saving patients, they were successful despite the great difficulty. Such successful cases are the result of the love and sincerity of entire medical team. I am very grateful to the entire medical team and every single medical staff for your dedication and love in giving of yourselves wholeheartedly to save patient’ lives. What you do is what is described in the Sutra of Innumerable Meanings.
The sutra describes doctors as great healers who know how to diagnose illnesses and prescribe the right medicine to treat patients. The sutra praises doctors’ nobleness, love, dedication to saving patients’ lives, and their bodhisattva spirit. No matter what discomfort they may have, they disregard it to save patients and to relieve them of their suffering. Their noble deeds and their greatness of spirit are mentioned in the sutra.
We can see that the work of doctors truly alleviates patients’ suffering. That is meritorious. Working in Tzu Chi’s hospital, I believe, no matter how hard or how tiring the work is, you’ll feel a sense of spiritual fulfillment. As you encourage each other, you will have more love to give to help others. You will also have higher perspective of the true value in life when you give of yourself to save other people’s lives. For them to dedicate themselves like this, we must really thank their family for their support.
Working as doctors or nurses in the hospital, they are always busy without a lot of personal time life because they never know when patients will get sick and come to the hospital. Life can end suddenly in one breath, so we have to flight for each second to save patients. Working in the hospital is not your average job which has a regular work schedule. Nowadays, many people are very particular about their quality of life and also their family time.
However, medical professionals aim to help patients with their medical needs and to safeguard patient’s lives and health with love. Doctors and nurses must have their family’s full support, so that they can stay committed serving at front line, fighting to save patients’ lives. We must truly be grateful to them for this I am grateful to all of our doctors, nurses, hospital staff and their families. I and everyone in Tzu Chi are very grateful to you.
At our hospital, if not for everyone being united in purpose, if not for all your family supporting you, truly, your work would be so tough and difficult to cope with. But with your family behind you giving you their support, your work becomes a joy and blessing. The work itself is exactly the same in content, but you feel completely different because you serve with your heart, so you feel a sweet sense of joy and willingness even though the work is demanding. In conclusion, doctors ought to be respected.
Nurses are also important and should be respected. All hospital personnel, be it doctors, pharmacists, lab technicians, etc. are all vital and essential. So, all professionals in the healthcare system ought to have the public’s respect. But we hospital personnel have to live up to a high standard ourselves for others to see our value. Through our example of selfless service, the public will definitely recognize the value of the medical profession.
