Date: September 15th, 2010 (Wednesday)
Lecturer: Master Zheng-Yan
Subject: Peace and Safety: Caring for the Earth by Recycling Resources 清淨源頭護地球

Good morning, everyone (Good morning).
It’s still early in the day, but you are all covered in sweat already.
So, you must have started working here even earlier in the morning, right? (Yes)
This is how we work hard to cherish resources and to protect the Earth.
In fact, here in Taiwan, we have something that no other place in the world has.
Do you know what that is?
Recycling volunteers.

In terms of the ratio of recycling volunteers to the population of a region, no other place in the world has as many recycling volunteers as we have here in Taiwan.
All of you truly give of yourselves without asking for anything in return. (付出無所求).
You don’t get paid for recycling, right? (Right)
With the recycling work we do, instead of saying that we are recycling trash, we should say that we are recycling and reusing resources.

By recycling the materials we already have, we will have less need to mine and deplete more of the Earth’s resources.
This way, our resources will not lessen because the things we recycle can be processed, returned to their original materials, and remade into new things.
By doing so, we are protecting the Earth by cherishing its resources, and the things we use will not become trash and a burden to the Earth.

You know the Tzu Chi song about trash, right?
“Think twice, before you throw away something as garbage.”
“Garbage can be a big headache.”
“Neighbors and friends, let’s all join efforts to do recycling together.”

Great, you all know this song well and enjoy singing it very much.
Is everyone keeping well? (Yes, we are)
Good. It’s a blessing to be safe and well, isn’t it? (Yes)
This is our Linkou recycling station.
Over 30 years ago, when I decided to build a hospital, an elderly gentleman wanted to donate nearly 70 hectares of land to Tzu Chi to build the hospital, but the land was here in Linkou, Taipei County.
He told me that he had a very large piece of land in Linkou.
I said to him, “I am sure it must be very large, but it is not where I want to build the hospital. I want to build the hospital in Hualien. Since I won’t use that piece of land, it would be a waste if I took it.”
So, I didn’t accept the land.
But in the end, didn’t I inspire the love in the inner field of many people’s minds? (Yes)

I am very grateful to those who helped me with building the hospital.
Indeed, a kind heart is even more important than material things and the inner field of people’s mind is even more important than a real piece of land.
This is because only when we have a kind heart and give rise to love will we be able to work to benefit others and create blessings for all.
This is why the inner field of everyone’s mind is more valuable to me than that piece of land.
So, I don’t regret having given up that piece of land.

Coming here today and seeing so many of you give of yourselves with a heart of love truly makes me feel that it’s worth much more than that piece of land I gave up.
So, I am truly very grateful.

Our recycling station here is an educational recycling station.
Mr. Lin, who is both a Tzu Cheng and a commissioner, is very mindful and dedicated.
He bought this piece of land and built the recycling station for Tzu Chi while also providing all the equipment needed.
See how he has built and set up this recycling station where everyone can cultivate themselves by benefiting others through doing recycling.
Thanks to him, I am able to come here today and see so many volunteers and all of you can gather here to see me.
It is all thanks to this recycling station, which Mr. Lin has set up with love and dedication.

Over the last few days, I’ve visited almost 30 recycling stations.
At some recycling station, our volunteers told me that they collect recyclables from more than 10 recycling points while at other stations, they told me they collect form 20 or even 30 points.

This morning, the first stop I went to was our Danshui recycling station in Taipei County.
This recycling station is actually set up within a junior high school.
I am very grateful to the school principal, Mr. Chen, for providing us with an area to build a recycling station at the back of the school, under several big trees.
It is a very cool and big area
I saw many volunteers, elderly and young alike carefully sorting the recyclables here, which is very touching.
Though some of our volunteers are very elderly, they are all very mindful, especially when sorting paper.
They even cut the paper.

Why do you have to cut this paper?
The white parts are more valuable.
You’re cutting out the printed parts so the white parts can be sold for more money.

She’s 94 years old and still very healthy.
She comes every day to cut the paper and doesn’t need to wear glasses.
Tell Master how you take car of your health.
An elder person, Zhou huaiyu said: I exercise, play ping-pong, chant the Buddha’s name and do recycling.
Master repeated it: Exercise, play ping-pong, chant the Buddha’s name and do recycling.

See how she enjoys doing recycling every day.
No words can express how touched and grateful I am when I see the dedication and efforts of our recycling bodhisattvas.
From my first stop at the junior high school this morning, all that I saw moved me very much.

At our Pingding recycling station in Taoyuan County, I saw that although the place was small, there were many volunteers there.
Everyone was diligently sorting recyclables, but as soon as I arrived, they quickly cleared up the space for us.
They were in the midst of sorting recyclables and there were still many things on the floor to be sorted.
I was very moved when I saw how they were seizing time to do recycling before I arrived.
That is how everyone there made good use of their time.

Here, I’d like to remind everyone that what we are collecting are resources, not trash.
We must further encourage people to clean their recyclables.
For the bottles, cans and jars we collect, we can kindly ask people to be more diligent by rinsing them clean before recycling them.
That’s how we can all be more diligent.
Everything must be rinsed clean with water before being taken away for recycling.
By doing so we’re actually being diligent.

If everyone can rinse their recyclables before taking them out for recycling, the bottles, jars and cans we collect will all be very clean.
This is what we should guide people to do.
The recyclables we collect can be returned to raw materials for making into other useful things.
That way, we won’t need to mine new resources.
Moreover, the money we collect from selling recyclables can be donated to Da Ai TV to produce wholesome programs.

See, Taiwan is truly a very blessed place as there are so many people full of love who give of themselves to protect the Earth.
By doing so, we’re also setting an example for others.
When we work to protect the Earth by doing recycling, we do so not only for the sake of Taiwan, but we also hope to inspire people around the world to care for the environment together with us and let people know we must cherish the Earth and not do things to harm it anymore.
