Subject: Finding Peace and Ease Through Giving with Joy

Doing good brings people joy and happiness. Those who like to help others must be very joyful and happy.
If we unhappy and reluctant, we’ll not give of ourselves to benefit others.
But if we are willing and happy, we’ll gain great joy and happiness from serving others.
Such joy and happiness will bring peace and ease to our minds.
When we feel peaceful and at ease, that is a blessing.

Whether we are materially rich or not, as long as we’re willing to give, we’ll feel very blessed at all times.
As we willingly give of ourselves, no matter how tiring and taxing the work is, we’ll be able to benefit others and bring them blessings.
When they are blessed, we’ll be blessed, too.
So, doing good will bring us joy and happiness as well peace, ease, and blessings.
This is how we will feel after we help others. We reap what we sow.

So, when we sow seeds of blessing, we’ll certainly reap fruits of blessing --
We’ll be loved and respected by others while also feeling a sense of inner peace.
Isn’t this the karmic law of cause and effect?

If we do bad, our mind will be filled with anger and ignorance, and we’ll feel very unhappy and grumpy all day.
All this is a result of our ignorance. For those who are less refined, they may burst out in anger and scold others.
They fly into a rage, hurting not only others, but also themselves. All this is a reflection of their afflictions within.
So, it’s difficult for them to be at peace. This is just the opposite of a mind at peace and ease that we’ll gain from doing good.
So, we truly must be very mindful.

In our everyday life, we can already witness the karmic law of cause and effect.
That’s why, at all times, we must cultivate Great Love and extend it to everyone in every part of the world.
We must give of ourselves to care for one another. In fact, Great Love knows no boundaries.
No matter which part of the world it is and wherever we go, we must give of ourselves whit this Great Love that is everlasting and all-embracing.
Great Love is also far-reaching. Whenever we go, we carry this love with us to share with others.

Take for example our volunteers in Shanghai, China.
When they first moved there for business in the 1990s, they were unfamiliar with everything there.
But with love in their hearts, they were determined to carry out Tzu Chi’s work locally.
It was truly very hard at first. So, they started by gathering Taiwanese businesspeople together to sweep the streets.

“At first, we didn’t know that sweeping the streets is something no one would do in China because it was a form of punishment during the Cultural Revolution period.”

“People would ask us if we were “gangdu,” which means fools in Shanghainese.”

But as the saying goes: “Success comes to those who persevere”. Over the years, people have felt their sincerity as they persistently give of themselves to do work that benefits the locals.
Apart from sweeping the streets, they also began visiting a senior home regularly.

There are over 300 residents there. With only one another as company every day, the elderly passed time with little joy.
However, Tzu Chi volunteers’ regular visits have brought life to the home, making the elderly very happy.

“Every time when Tzu Chi volunteers come visit us, I can truly feel their genuine sincerity, and that move me very deeply.”

“I’ve been here for ten years and Tzu Chi volunteers are still caring for us persistently. They’ve been doing this for over ten years, which is truly remarkable and admirable.”

And in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, businesspeople from Taiwan are also carrying out Tzu Chi’s work there. Take Xue-yun for example.
When she relocated to Yiwu, she also brought Tzu Chi’s spirit of love there and began inspiring the locals to visit the needy in nearby rural areas with her visit the needy in nearby rural areas with her during their visits they saw many elderly people living alone while others were suffering from illnesses with no one to care for them.

I am indeed very grateful to the Tong family in Yiwu Mr. Tong is our volunteer.
He joined Tzu Chi after he saw how Xue-yun cared for the poor.
So, he brought it up to his father that in the mountainous areas nearby, there were many elderly people in need.
Hearing that, his father supported him to join Tzu Chi, and even provided their old house for Tzu Chi to use as a home to care for these elderly people.
After renovations, this old house is now senior home where the elderly can live together and care for one another.
Mr. Tong visits them other, and his older sister cooks three meals a day for the elderly.
Other Tzu Chi volunteers also visit often, making sure that they have what they need .
This is how volunteers care for the elderly.

We also see a 17-year-old girl who lives with these elderly people.
For the past few years, Tzu Chi had been looking after her and her father.
Because their family was poor and her father was suffering from leukemia, her mother took her younger brother and left, leaving her behind to care for her father. So, Tzu Chi volunteers began to provide care for them.

In 2010, the girl’s father passed away.
So, Tzu Chi volunteers brought her to live with this group of elderly people while also supporting to go to school while also supporting her to go to school.
Now, when she returns from school, there are these elderly people caring for her like family.
Her presence has also brought energy and life to the place. This is indeed a very heartwarming story.

Although it was not easy to carry out Tzu Chi’s work in China when our volunteers first began as they were not familiar with the place, with love in their hearts, they have been able to gradually reach out to more places in China and extend their all-embracing Great Love to more people

Great Love can truly transcend borders to reach everyone no matter which part of the world they are universal.
Seeing that, I am truly very grateful. It truly makes me feel that it is truly a blessing to be born as humans.
However, as humans, we must sow blessings. When we do good, we’ll be happy every day.
That is a true blessing.

When we see others acting unreasonably out of anger and ignorance, we must reflect upon ourselves.
People like that are disliked by others.
Do we want to be someone others dislike? No, we don’t. That is why we must strive to be someone who is at ease and loved by others.
Would you like to be like that? (YES) When we can give of ourselves joyfully, we will be able to live a life of peace and ease.
Remember, we mustn’t fight to get our way as that will only bring us many afflictions.
Only when we can give of ourselves willingly will we gain much joy and happiness in return.

為善那就是喜樂，幫助別人的人，這個人一定是很喜、很樂！你如果不歡喜、不甘願，你不會不去做利益眾生的事；你很甘願、你很歡喜，願意去付出，做了以後總是歡喜快樂。這種歡喜、快樂過後，那種的心靈輕安自在，輕安自在這就是福。
Doing good brings people joy and happiness. Those who like to help others must be very joyful and happy. If we unhappy and reluctant, we’ll not give of ourselves to benefit others. But if we are willing and happy, we’ll gain great joy and happiness from serving others. Such joy and happiness will bring peace and ease to our minds. When we feel peaceful and at ease, that is a blessing.

我們人人不管你有錢沒有錢，可是我們永遠為善都是在福中。你願意為善，願意去付出，哪怕是再累、再累，總是是造福人群，人群有福了；當然自己也是有福。所以這種的為善喜樂，輕安自在在福中，這都是我們應該都可以感受到的，這就是造福因、得福緣。

假如是為惡，那就是整天都是在瞋、癡…整天心都很不快樂、很不歡喜，整天都是在生悶氣，這種的就是癡。常常生悶氣，如果較粗相的，那就是發作出來，發作出來就罵人，或者是那樣的怒氣沖沖，對人不利，其實對自己是很傷害的，這種的粗重煩惱，這對自己的心難安啊！就是跟前面的，為善輕安自在恰恰相反的，所以我們應該要很用心。

因緣果報的循環，原來都是在我們的日常生活中。所以我們要時時培養大愛無疆、縱橫無際，我們要彼此之間付出，其實大愛無疆界，不管是橫的、或者是直的，天長地久，我們走到哪裡，這份愛都是永恆的、不離不棄。而且這份愛就是綿綿長流，你走哪裡，這份愛就跟你到哪裡去。

看到了上海慈濟人，開始的時候，走進了這一塊大陸，很陌生，但是那一分愛，就是要落實在當地裡，所以那一段時間做得很辛苦，在那裡，愛那一片土地，會把台商大家大家呼籲起來掃街道。
Take for example our volunteers in Shanghai, China. When they first moved there for business in the 1990s, they were unfamiliar with everything there. 上海慈濟人邱玉芬師姐：「其實不知道，掃街其實在這邊，是非常忌諱的，它是文化大革命的時候，那個黑五類，你被罰，那你是到街上去掃街。」

上海慈濟人楊月貴師姐：「以前常常有很多人都說，你們是不是港都啊？上海化港都就是傻瓜。」

可是人云：「戲棚下站久也是人家的。」他們真誠的付出，所以路遙知馬力，這一匹馬就是走在正道裡，他們不只是掃大地、疼惜自然，他們還要走入敬老院去。

有三百多位的老人家，天天都是你老、我老；你看我、我看你；你哀聲、我嘆氣…總是這樣地過日子。可是台商慈濟人開始這樣帶進了朝氣，讓老人家歡喜。

還有在浙江省的義烏市，在這個地方，我們台商也踏上了，像雪雲她也是，從走入了那裡去，把慈濟的愛也帶進去。開始帶動當地人就去訪貧，看到了在鄉下、山上的，那樣的孤老、那樣的病苦，這一群老人家誰來照顧誰？

真的也是很感恩，感恩就在義烏有一戶人家，那也是我們的志工，是雪雲把他帶起來的。這一位童先生，他跟父親提起了，離他們的地方不遠的山上，有這麼多沒人照顧的老人家，他的父親就支持兒子做慈濟。同時把他們的古厝，無償地提供出來，給慈濟整修一番，這個古厝就變成了一個慈濟溫暖之家，那就是老人幸福之園。童先生他也常常來探望，還有他的姊姊，就負責老人家要吃的、煮飯等等… 慈濟人三不五時也是去看，提供這一群老人的生活等等…這都是老者安之。

同時又有一個少女，今年十七歲，過去幾年間，這個家庭是慈濟在關懷。因為她的母親看到了這個家庭這麼窮，先生又病得那樣的重，所以她就帶著兒子離家了。這個家庭剩下這個小女孩陪伴著爸爸，所以慈濟人長期陪伴著。

在大陸，慈濟人雖然開始去的時候，是人地生疏。可是只要心中有愛，不管是縱或是橫的，只要有愛，就是那樣的密密長流，這種的綿綿長流，這都是大愛。

看到別人那樣的無理的那樣的瞋、癡，我們看到了要自我警惕，那樣的人很惹人厭，我們要做一個惹人厭的人嗎？(不要) 對！所以我們要做一個輕安自在、人見人愛，這樣你們歡喜做嗎？(歡喜) 是啊！所以我們能有這樣的人生，就是天天都是輕安自在。好吧！人世間不要爭，爭來的都是充滿了煩惱，我們志在付出，得來是充滿了歡喜快樂。
