Lecturer: Master Zheng-Yan
Subject: Cleansing Our Minds with the Water of Dharma

In the Lotus Sutra, it says: ”In the era of turbidity, living beings have a lot of impurities”. Back in the Buddha’s time, society was simpler, yet the Buddha said:” In the era of turbidity, living beings have a lot of impurities”. By saying that, he was actually referring to our time now. This era we live in now is full of impurities. This root cause of all this lies in the impurities in people’s minds.

This is because living beings share collective karma, and so, they suffer collective karmic retribution. The disorder in today’s society comes from people’s inability to tell right from wrong and good from evil. As they are set to criticize others, they cannot look at things from a clear and correct perspective, and that’s why they cannot tell from wrong.

All this is the source of social disorder, which comes from the impurities in people’s minds. Such is a karmic seed, which originates from our mind. The disasters we are experiencing now, be they natural or manmade, are the result of the collective karma we created. So, we must let everyone know that such karmic seeds originate from our mind, and are manifested in our actions, speech and thoughts.

And, karmic seeds arise in our mind because our mind is easily swayed and affected. That is why we must seize every chance to form good karmic affinities with others. For example, if you listen to my teachings in the morning, but argue with others in the afternoon, doesn’t that show that you’ve forgotten everything I’ve said?

So, at all times, you must be mindful of every thought that arises in your mind so that you won’t forget what I say immediately, when things happen to you. Let me give you an example. You bump into someone standing behind you, when you suddenly turn around. Instead of apologizing to her, you say: ”What are you standing here for?”

See how we can easily form bad karmic affinities if we are not mindful. Such unwholesome thoughts can easily arise in our mind every day, causing us to do wrong things. This is how easily our mind can be swayed and affected external conditions. That is why we must work hard to take good care of our minds. In our daily life, it is very easy for us to sow bad karmic seeds or form bad karmic affinities with others.

So, we must be able to discern our wrongs. To do that, we need to take in the Dharma. Dharma is like water. Only Dharma can cleanse layers upon layers of filth away from our minds. As the dust of ignorance gathers and accumulates in our minds, our pure true nature, which is clear as a clean mirror, becomes blurred and unable to reflect the truths in the world for us to see and show us the correct path that we should walk.

So, we must cleanse the dust of ignorance away from our minds so that our true nature can become a clean and shinny mirror that can clearly reflect everything that comes before it. That is why I’ve been earnestly hoping that everyone can quickly practice repentance, take in the Dharma, and bathe in the spring of Dharma.

Dharma is like water. When we take in the Dharma, the water of Dharma cleanse us—It can wash away the defilements in our minds and help us get rid of our bad habitual tendencies.

As I often say, spiritual cultivation is all about changing our bad habitual tendencies. If we cannot do that, then no matter how kindhearted we are, we’ll often commit wrongdoings. That’s why we must repent deeply and work to get rid of our ignorance and afflictions. Everyone, the karmic law of cause and effect is true and cannot be defiled. How can we not repent when we’ve done wrong?

When our minds are pure and calm, afflictions won’t arise and we’ll be able to be at peace and bring harmony to world. So, we must constantly reflect upon ourselves. As we’re now learning the Dharma, we must be mindful of our thoughts and not let the dust of ignorance gather in our minds and cover our true nature. Instead, we must constantly wipe the mirror of our mind, so that it will remain clean and clearly reflect everything for us to see and show us the path that we should walk.

So, I hope everyone can memorize the passages from the Water Repentance text. We must work harder to remember and keep these teachings in mind at all times, and put them into practice in our daily life. This is how we can diligently cultivate ourselves step by step toward returning to our pure true nature.

I hope everyone can cultivate with such diligence. Practicing repentance is not about chanting sutras or praying. Rather, we should open up our hearts to others, be understanding and all-embracing, and support and encourage one another to walk onto the Bodhisattva Path.

If we can do that, then we will gain spiritual joy. When we truly repent with our hearts, walk onto this broad and straight Bodhisattva Path, and reflect on our wayward ways, we will naturally be filled with Dharma bliss and feel at peace and ease.

What I’m most worried about is that, while learning the verses and sign language, you will have a hard time remembering everything. So, in remembering one line but forgetting the next, you will end up feeling frustrated and giving rise to afflictions.

Please do not be troubled, or give yourself too much pressure. You must focus on learning first. As you get better, you’ll because more interested, and the more you read the text and repent, the more peace and ease you will feel.

This is to bathe in the spring of Dharma to cleanse away the impurities in our mind, eliminate our bad habitual tendencies, and rid our afflictions and ignorance through repentance. Then, we will find joy in the Dharma and truly come to feel at ease and peace.

All in all, everyone should delve into the Water Repentance text in order to bathe in the spring of Dharma. Doing so is very important as only then can we cleanse away the impurities in our mind and rid our bad habitual tendencies. I earnestly hope everyone can study the Water Repentance text and find spiritual joy and peace of mind. I’m sure such joy and peace in our minds will also bring peace and harmony to society.

Everyone, please cultivate diligently and do not give up halfway. But don’t give yourself pressure either. So, please be mindful always.

20110419 --- Cleansing Our Minds with the Water of Dharma (建立心靈的道場) Empty
20110419 --- Cleansing Our Minds with the Water of Dharma (建立心靈的道場) Empty周三 4月 27, 2011 12:34 am
