20130713 願學菩薩護眾生 Aspiring to be a Bodhisattva to Guide Living Beings

I see that you are all taking part in study groups to read and discuss my teachings together. I am very happy to hear about this. What makes me even happier is hearing that every morning you listen to my Dharma talk live via video-conferencing. It makes me feel that you really are with me always.

When I get ready to share the Dharma, you get ready to listen. Knowing that you are with me and listening every morning, I am very grateful. Just a few days before I left Hualien, I shared with you that if we do 100 good deeds, that create one blessing. One hundred blessings create one attribute of beauty and dignity.

How long do we need to cultivate to develop the kind of beauty and dignity the Buddha has, culminating in 32 attributes? Besides these, the Buddha also has eighty other fine physical characteristics that distinguish him. From his head down to his feet, he has all sorts of fine characteristics that distinguish his beauty and dignity.

So, upon seeing him, people take a liking to him and want to become his disciple for him to teach and guide. Such is the power of the Buddha’s 32 attributes of beauty and dignity. Reflecting on this, it takes the doing of many, many good works to create a blessing. We often speak about creating blessings for the community.

This is a phrase we use now. It means that we ought to go amongst people to do good and benefit them. This is “doing good” and “creating blessings”. While doing this, we create positive affinities with people. Learning Buddha’s way, we need to be bodhisattvas and continually work for the good of living beings.

May we truly take the Buddha’s teachings deep into our hearts so that the Dharma is in our hearts and actions, with us living the Dharma and having the heart of a Buddha. So, we have to mindfully cultivate ourselves. We have to seize every second to cultivate our mind and our actions. That second is when we must cultivate.

Each second is the one and only, not repeatable. Each of our thoughts determines the course of our life. In an instant, with a wholesome thought, and a decision to walk the right path, the course of our life is set. Just like my leaving home – when I sent grocery shopping with a basket, a thought flashed through my mind; why take care of just my own family? I should take care of all people in need.

Though nowadays, I say that we need to go even further to help with world crises. So, from that instant and that decision at the market, I hat set the course for my life. That’s why I say one thought determines our life and that each second is unique as our decision at that second determines our life.

So, we should seize the moment and stay committed at our resolution. Let’s hurry and seize that moment. Seize that flashing thought to make it a life-changing event forever. In my life, it has been more than 50 years since I started on the path of cultivation, with the thought that set my life path.

I believe there is life after this one because Buddha nature never ceases to exist. So, if we seize our flashing thought, we can be one with our innate Buddha nature. Then that is eternity. So, all of us should committed to our vows and make it lasting.

Time moves on like the passing of each season, from spring to winter. So, all of us should stay committed to our vows through the test of time, regardless of the passing of spring, fall, winter or summer. Our resolution must be firm. Our vows must be for eternity.

If we can do this, I believe everything we do will be worthwhile and we can work with anyone very joyfully. Everyone, we really have to seize this opportunity to learn the Dharma and practice it in our daily life. Only by doing this can we enter into essence of our Jing Si Dharma Lineage.

This essence is about our hearts being in touch with Dharma at all times living the Dharma in everyday life and going out amongst people to use the Dharma to help the world. If the Dharma is in your heart and actions, in everyday life and as you go amongst people, then as you do this, you are carrying out the mission of Tzu Chi.

In Tzu Chi, we are building roads for people of the world to travel. To do this, we need to harbor the Four Great Vows. Only with these four vows can we understand what is the great Bodhi path and aspire toward Buddhahood.

We also need the Four Immeasurable Minds. “We aspire to enter the sutra treasury to gain wisdom as vast as the ocean” This is an aspirtation that we make when we take the Three Refuges. If we can live out the spirit of loving-kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity, naturally when we go amongst people, we will be able to inspire people and guide them.

In the course of helping them, we will develop a lot of wisdom because every person’s story shows us life’s truths and Dharma. As long as we go out to help people, in each person, we will discover a sutra that can teach us the Dharma. So, when you start helping people, you will start gaining wisdom.

Then, we you go amongst people, you will have no problem in guiding them. Our place of cultivation is amongst people. By working to benefit people, we are cultivating blessings. By learning to give of ourselves, we are cultivating wisdom. So, by learning the Dharma, we will gain wisdom. If we have wisdom, we will have no problem in guiding people and inspiring them to walk the path with us. Let me ask you:

“Have you gained many new volunteers?”
“Yes”

“How many new people joined in one day or in one year?” This is something we need to think more about. To inspire people to walk the path with us, we have to go amongst people and reach out. How many people can we influence, how many hearts can be purified so that our society can become more peaceful?

This is our responsibility. So, everyone, you need to broaden your heart and keep a pure, wholesome mind. Then naturally, you will accumulate blessings and develop the kind of beauty and dignity that will make people happy to see you and want to follow you.

Then you have to quickly guide them back to me. This is in this lifetime. In future lives, if your blessings are greater than mine, it will be in your turn to guide me. The role of master and disciple switches.

This all depends on how much good you do and how many blessings are developed to give you how many attributes of beauty and dignity, which aid you in guiding living beings.
