20160718 國土危脆同體悲 Taking Action to Help Those in Suffering

The force of Nature is truly powerful. In May, the rain season started in Sri Lanka, and a tropical depression had brought forth torrential rains. From the news, we see that a sudden, massive landslide had buried large parts of three villages instantly and destroyed everything.

Tzu Chi volunteers wanted to quickly go t0 the disaster area to assess and understand the situation. Yet, the roads were closed, and there was no way in. About a month ago, the roads reopened, and a Buddhist monk who is familiar with the area took Tzu Chi volunteers to visit the local military and police, who then took the volunteers to the disaster area and explained the situation to them.

Tzu Chi volunteers then quickly went to see where the survivors are staying. They saw that some were staying at a temple, some were staying at a school, and others were staying at various shelters. There are many people without a place to stay.

This is a temple in the Kegalle District in Sri Lanka. It has become a shelter for survivors of the landslides. The space on my right accommodates 12 families. This space with hanging fabric is where survivors sleep. Let’s take a look inside.

There are only three mats here but shared by 40 people. Other people have to sleep on straw mats in the outer walkways.

We don’t have enough mattresses or mosquito nets, so we often get mosquito bites. The children are all uncomfortable. Water also gets inside on rainy days.

It is very hard for 12 families to take turns sleeping on the mats. When will they find a place to live in? After Tzu Chi volunteers arrived, they conducted disaster assessment. They went to shelters to see survivors’ living conditions. Many kindhearted people have donated food, so survivors won’t go hungry.

When Tzu Chi volunteers came, they provided the survivors with Jing Si multipurpose folding beds and blankets. The affected families said these supplies are what they need the most at the time, and can help them make it through this difficult time.

The local government and residents are very moved. Tzu Chi volunteers not only provided the survivors with what they needed the most, but also showed sincere love in comforting them. More than two months have passed since the disaster.

Survivors finally have smiles on their faces, so the government and locals are very touched. There is much suffering in this world. It’s no use to talk about principles but not practicing them in daily life. We should take the Dharma, principles of doing good deeds, to heart, and put them into practice in daily life. We should step forth and reach out to embrace and comfort people in suffering.

We should feel others’ pain and suffering as our very own. Look at how they’re living right now. We should try to be in their shoes. Indeed, each second is long and difficult for them.

Here, we talk about how time flies, but for the survivors, time feels long to them as they wait for the hope which seems never to come. Tzu Chi volunteers have overcome many difficulties to conduct disaster assessments, understand the situation of survivors, and reach out to provide relief and comfort personally.

This is the power of love, which shows the goodness in human nature. Everyone is capable of helping others. Instead of talking about ideas of helping people, we should take action to help others. Tzu Chi volunteers have travelled to Sir Lanka, which is far away from us, to provided disaster relief.

We’re doing the same in Fujian, China. After Typhoon Nepartak passed through Taiwan, it made Iandfall in China, bringing with it heavy rains which led to flooding and caused severe damage and suffering. But if we’re determined, we can overcome all difficulties to help others.

The local leaders have expressed their gratitude and have been taking us around disaster areas to allow us to understand the situations of all the affected families so we can evaluate the amount of supplies we need for relief distribution.

This requires us to give of ourselves with love. We hope we can inspire more people in China to be volunteers to work in unity and harmony to help people in need. To have favorable weather, we must harbor sincere piety. Then, when there is a disaster, we will have many volunteers and more strength to help with disaster relief.

With more people, things get done quicker, but everyone needs to work in unity and harmony and give with selfless Great Love. Thus, Tzu Chi volunteers need to go help those in need to see for themselves the many sufferings in the world.

This will strengthen their compassion so they can understand how to walk the Bodhisattva Path and take every step firmly and steadily. In Taiwan, our volunteers are still carrying out disaster relief. We will soon start the planning of mid- to long- term aid projects to help the affectees have a safe home to live in.

This is what we plan to do in the future. When conducting disaster assessment, it’s very important that we understand the needs of the affected families. This requires time and the help of local governments. We also need to be mindful in conducting disaster assessment to truly understand what needs to be done.

All in all, there are many disasters in this world. We need to continually inspire and gather the power of love and most importantly, everyone should harbor sincere piety.
