20170210人間菩提:見苦契理濟群倫Using Our Abilities to Help People in Suffering

We see that the refugees stranded in Serbia are helpless. They don’t know where to find a place where they can lead a stable life. In this freezing weather, the severe cold can be a threat to their survival. They also face constant difficulties.

How do we help these refugees live a better life? Their harsh living conditions make each day feels like an year. Although we say “It’s so cold” when the temperature drops, we still have a warm house to love, warn clothing to wear, and have water and power, which allow us to live without worries. Thus, we really need to be grateful for everything we have.

When seeing people suffering some might think that those in suffering are far away and have nothing to do with them. However, we should not think like that. We must regard the refugees as if they were our loved ones who are suffering in remote places.

The world is full of impurities, and people’s hearts are in disharmony. Despite living peacefully today, we don’t know
what will happen tomorrow. Thus, we must cherish our blessings and create more blessings.

We should adjust our mindset. Seeing people in suffering, we must remind ourselves to have love in our hearts. When we regard those in suffering as if they were our own family, love will naturally arise in our hearts.

The refugees are truly suffering. In Serbia, there are still many refugees who have not registered with the authorities because they are afraid that they would be immediately deported.

They hide in various locations and do not receive any aid because they’re not on the refugee list. Thus, these refugees suffer more than those on the refugee list because they have to run and hide from the authorities for fear of being discovered and deported. How can we not empathize with their sufferings?

We must give rise to compassion when we see people suffer. Tzu Chi volunteers from different countries have travelled a long way to Serbia to provide care for the refugees. These volunteers are giving of themselves out of compassion.

Despite the unsanitary living conditions, volunteers went to where the refugees live to assess and understand the needs of the refugees and purchase the things they need. The volunteers provided the refugees with new
undergarments.

We also help them to live with a more dignified life. The volunteers are mindfully giving of themselves for the refugees.

In Serbia, it is love that allows us to truly give of ourselves to help people in suffering. This is the power of love.
We also see that a big fire broke out in the Philippines a couple of days ago and damaged more than 3,000 houses.

We see that Tzu Chi volunteers immediately set up a mobile kitchen at the disaster area to provide hot meals for the affectees in a timely manner.

They are also preparing for aid distributions. Tzu Chi volunteers always provide relief in a timely manner. Volunteers in the Philippines always mobilize very quickly.

In Kaohsiung, Taiwan, when the cold front came, local Tzu Chi volunteers went on the streets to care for the homeless at night. Tzu Chi volunteers everywhere are always caring for those in suffering. It is indeed very heartwarming to see volunteers help those in need.

Yesterday at the Tzu Chi Missions Meeting of our hospitals and Tzu Chi University, I heard several professors and doctors reporting about their research education and clinical practice.

I am very impressed with Dr. Chen Li-Kuang. He is very humble. After he obtained his doctorate, he humbles himself and served as a resident doctor. This is indeed admirable. Despite having a doctorate, he worked with young doctors as a resident doctor at the emergency room.

With the power of love, he has been serving in the emergency room to collect clinical date for medical research. Even though he has a doctorate, he still feels the need to conduct in-depth clinical research to understand various illnesses and find ways of treating patients.

He also wants to create an environment for patients to make a smooth recovery and leave the hospital healthy.

When SARS broke out in 2003, despite all the risks, Dr. Chen engaged in the study of the SARS virus to find ways to prevent infection.

“SARS samples collected in eastern Taiwan were all sent to the Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital. The Hospital received around 20 to 30 samples a day from the patients. When there were suspicious of cluster infection dozens of samples would be sent to the hospital at once.”

“At the time, Master told us to use the spirit of providing disaster relief to develop a way to treat SARS and to do this diligently day and night. Master also told us that we should willingly do what others refuse to do.”

Dr. Chen used the spirit of providing disaster relief to engage in medical research and humbled himself to work for the benefit of others. These are some of the things I told Dr. Chen.

In yesterday’s meeting, Dr. Chen said that the aerosol containing bacteriophage his team developed has received a patent as well as an award. This aerosol containing bacteriophage that his team developed can eliminate a particular antibiotic-resistant bacterium in hospitals so that patients won’t become infected by this bacterium. This is truly touching.

Whether it’s relief efforts for refugees or researches to prevent infections, the spirit of helping people in both are the same. Thus, the spirit of medical research is the same as that of conducting disaster relief. Works that benefit humans are all good deeds
