20170211及時送暖解飢寒Providing Timely Aid in Times of Suffering
Every day, I pay attention to what’s happening in the world, and I’m deelpy concerned. There are still many disasters in the World. However, where there is love, there is warmth, just like sunshine in cold winter. Recently, it is quite chilly in Taiwan, and we see warm acts in Taiwan.
We see the homeless curled up on sidewalk. Tzu Chi volunteers warmly offered them hot meals, as well as thing to keep them warm, such as hand warmers and clothes. This shows the love of our society.
We see that, in a far-away place, Serbia, a group of volunteers from Bosnia had gone with Tzu Chi volunteers for relief distributions.
This time, originally, the management of the local refugee agency asked us to provide breakfast, but due to the renovation of the kitchen there, the agency further requested Tzu Chi to provide lunch as well, to which our volunteers agreed.
Fortunately, our instant rice comes in handy. We’re grateful to the group of volunteers from Bosnia. In volunteering with Tzu Chi volunteers, they gained insights, and their sincere love was brought forth.
They have been willingly dedicate them selves in relief effort. To prepare such a large pot of instant rice with water, it takes a lot of strength to stir it.
It is really good to have these strong volunteers lending a helping hand. Volunteers prepare lunch for the refugees with meals that were catered to their taste. The steaming hot rice has the taste of home.
It comes with curry flavor or tomato flavor, which suit their taste. The refugees were very grateful and happy.
Tzu Chi volunteers also shared with the refugees about cherishing the bowls and spoons, and explained to them the bowls and spoons came from Taiwan.
They explained in detail, how the instant rice came about, along with the introduction of Tzu Chi’s coin bank program from Taiwan. Tzu Chi volunteers have been sharing many touching stories to the refugees.
So, the volunteers from Bosnia heard these stories and understood Tzu Chi’s spirit and values. The more they get involved, the more touched and interested they are. They give of themselves from the bottom of their heart.
They wished to come to Taiwan. Before coming to Taiwan, they need to learn Tzu Chi etiquette. They used the break time to learn and practice.
The volunteer, Mr. Chang, told them that the first thing they need to learn is how to use chopsticks. The Bosnian volunteers said that they are fine with learning other things, but using chopsticks is difficult for them. Despite this, they are not deterred by this and are determined to learn.
They also need to learn how to prostrate. Mr. Chang patiently and mindfully taught them how to prostrate correctly. Their wish is to come to Taiwan to see me. Therefore, they are learning very willingly.
We also see that in the Philippines, crowded houses in poor neighborhoods are prone to fire disasters. When a fire breaks out, hundreds of houses are damaged. The recent fire impacted nearly 3,000 houses. Local Tzu Chi volunteers offered timely help and care to the affectees.
Tzu Chi’s mobile kitchen came in handy this time. This unit was designed by Tzu Chengs and me. For nearly ten years, we have been testing and improving it. Now, the mobile kitchen is quite complete.
In the evening, there are solar lamps to light the kitchen. In places without drinking water, as long as its reserved tank is filled with water, the kitchen, equipped with a steamer, a stove and work for stir-frying and cooking, can prepare food continuously.
So, within a day, this mobile kitchen can make many servings of food continuously for people.
It was put to use effectively this time. During meal time, it provided food for more than 1,000 affectees. Food was provided for whole day. It is really touching. In times of suffering, the power of love enables us to provide timely help and care for those in need.
We also see a very heart-warming scene. The local Tzu Chi volunteers in Africa are adorable in their Chinese New Year greetings.
Be content, grateful, tolerant, and have mutual love and converted efforts.

Although they are far away in Lesotho, their hearts are with us in Taiwan. They were sending Chinese New Year greetings to Tzu Chi volunteers around the world. This is really touching.
The beat time to start anew in a year is in the spring. Indeed, the Chinese New Year has come to an end, but the spring in our heart is everlasting, as fresh as the start of spring filled with energy. I hope everyone can be like this all the time.
Our world is full of suffering. We need to nurture a loving heart and help turn this world of impurities into a world of peace and harmony.
