The imbalance in the climate as well as people’s minds both originate from people’s hearts. We enjoy material comfort, which leads to exploitation of Earth.
The source of all pollution can be traced to the products we use in our daily life. everyone is responsible for the pollution on Earth. The piles of trash are the result of people’s excessive use of resources and buying new products all the time.
The current focus of the manufacturing industry is on making profit. Thus, to gain profit, manufacturers cater to people’s desires and continually produce and promote new products, leading to vicious circle that creates vast amounts of trash.
We see that in India, mountains and rivers were beautiful and clean, but now, much of the beautiful environment is littered with trash.
“Earlier, there was no plastic, no paper here. Now, whenever we buy stuff from the market, it comes in plastic. Even yogurt is sold in plastic. Kids in the village eat noodles and throw wrappers around. That is why there is so much trash.”
What is there to think about? I am just going to turn it all into ash. We can’t worry about the pollution it causes. That is not our concern. Otherwise, pack it in bags and throw it down the mountainside. Even then, it is going to be problematic as the area will be full of trash bags.”
Seeing this, we feel that people’s minds are deluded. We have polluted the Earth, which negatively affected our health. The air we breathe is harmful to our health because it is severely polluted.
What has caused pollution? One reason is that the manufacturing industry causes smog. Another reason is that some people get rid of their trash by burning them and the burning process creates air pollution.
It is truly terrible to see that the Earth and its ecosystem have been greatly damaged. The air we breathe is also seriously polluted, which will definitely have an adverse effect on our health and our lives.
Humans cause this pollution. The reason for all this pollution is that people’s minds are tainted, and they want to fulfill their desires. In Taiwan, we also see that in Lishan, many valleys and mountainsides are filled with trash.
“The slopes are about 30 degrees, so the workers need to put on safety ropes and belts to reach the riverbed. After they get there, they pick up the litter and put them into bags.”“If it rains, the trash on the slopes will get washed down to the reservoir.
This will seriously affect the safety of the drinking water for the Greater Taichung area.” Why is there so much trash? Wherever people go, they leave trash behind. There is also a lot of trash in many places around Taiwan. We also see trash floating in the ocean. Not only is there a lot of trash in the mountains, but it has also polluted the oceans.
Many sea creatures such as fish have ingested plastic trash. When they ingest too much, they die.“Here we have laid out the content. In total there’s around 30 different plastic bags as well as some flakes of plastic here, which is what the whale has eaten.
I believe that this whale has experienced abdominal pain for a long time. There was too much trash inside its stomach. It was in so much pain that it couldn’t eat. The plastic was like a big ball in the stomach and filled it almost completely.”
When an autopsy was performed, all sorts of trash were found in there. In a word, people’s hearts are the cause of all disasters. Thus, we need to emphasize on education. Besides educating young children, we also need to educate ourselves to purify our minds.
All in all, when we have correct thoughts, our lives will not be so difficult.
We also see many Tzu Chi recycling volunteers collecting and sorting recyclables, which seems endless.“The area here has been dirty for a long time, and a lot of the litter is recyclable.”
“Whenever I see people throw recyclables into the trash bin, my heart aches. Everyone should be responsible for protecting the Earth we live on, but before we tell others to do so, we need to do it ourselves.

“That’s correct. We don’t get paid for this. The main reason we’re doing this is that the reservoir here supplies water to the entire Greater Taichung area. Thus, by collecting recyclables, we are protecting our water resources.”
“We pick up recyclables from Huanshan and Huagang Tribal Villages. After that, we transport the recyclables to Dongshi Township or Yilan County to sell them. A round trip takes about six to seven hours.”
To solve the littering problem from its root, everyone needs to understand the consequences of littering and take collective action to save the Earth. If we don’t do this, no matter how many volunteers there are, they won’t be able to keep up with the litter that people throw away.
When there are a lot more people littering than the people cleaning up the litter, their efforts are limited. Thus, I hope that by educating children about reducing the amount of trash we produce and doing this ourselves, we can truly protect the Earth.
Keeping the environment clean, reducing pollution, conserving energy, and reducing carbon emissions are the most fundamental ways of protecting the Earth. To do this, we need to keep our desires in check so that we won’t keep on consuming things and creating more trash.
