20200319尊重生命同生息Repenting Through Going Vegetarian in Times of an Epidemic

We see how anxious people around the world are as many rush to stock up on daily supplies. Amidst the chaos, many people's minds have become unsettled. I really feel deeply for them. As expounded in Buddhist texts, when there is an epidemic, the best solutions is everyone's practice of deep repentance. Without everyone's repentance, it will be hard to contain the epidemic.

That's why I've been encouraging vegetarianism, hoping that everyone can practice repentance. Why should we go vegetarian? Because people have killed countless animals for meat. Livestock farming has been developed because of meat consumption. There are over 7.7 billion people in the world. And how many animals are killed for meat? In each single day, over 200 million animals are slaughtered. So, more than 77 billion animals lose their lives in merely a single year.

Think about it. In a year alone, more than 77 billion animals are killed for meat. Aquatic animals are not counted in this number. More than 77 billion land animals alone are slaughtered in a year. Every day, like us humans, livestock exhale impure gases and excrete body waste, thereby polluting the air and the land. How many livestock are raised in the world? The Earth is not only home to humans, but shared by all living beings.

Yet, people have been slaughtering animals cruelly and sowing bad karma collectively. The coronavirus outbreak has alarmed many people. This is due to people's bad karma. Yet, have people awakened to this? Not yet. We see how Tzu Chi members combat the outbreak. (Supt. Lin) of our hospital in Hualien has been promoting vegetarianism in the hospital.

Supt. Chao of our hospital in Taipei encourages everyone to have vegetarian meals in the food court of the hospital. So, discount coupons, each worth 50 NTD (1.65 USD), ahve been given out. In our hospital in Taichung, Supt. Chien cares for staff members by bringing them hot tea in person. This is how he supports and cares for staff members with love.

Supt. Lai of our hospital in Dalin has also been promoting vegetarianism, and Asst. Supt. Lin has been sharing with people around the world the benefits of vegetarianism and the many environmental problems that have been caused by a meaty diet. For many years, our Tzu Chi members have been sharing the benefits of vegetarianism and calling on everyone to go vegetarian. Yet, not many people have gone vegetarian.

To contain the coronavirus outbreak, we work hard to encourage vegetarianism. Recently, our CEO Mr. Yen has visited various local governments in Taiwan, hoping that those under home quarantine can go vegetarian. we also hope they can have sufficient nutrients. So, we work with local governments to bring vegetarian instant foods, Jing Si Aphorisms books, etc. to those under home quarantine.

We've even provided vegetarian foods for city hall staff members. The foods are truly great in smell, look and taste. See how easy it is to go vegetarian. Yet, many people are deluded and think it is very hard to do so. The nature of the Buddha and all living beings is one and the same. By changing our mindset, we can all tap into our Buddha nature and become a Bodhisattva. Yet, many people let themselves remain unenlightened and mundane, which is truly a pity.

As all living beings are interconnected, we must love and respect all life. This is the heart of a Bodhisattva and a Buddha. Everyone can become a Buddha or a Bodhisattva. Simply by shifting our mindset, the world will be saved. If we live in peace with viruses, outbreaks will end. If we leave viruses alone, they will not disturb human beings and will look for other hosts. So, we all need to live in harmony with all life.

We also see a Tzu Chi volunteer, who is an entrepreneur in Malaysia. When his son got married, he encouraged him to hold a vegetarian banquet. No animals were killed in the banquet, and everyone attended the banquet and gave their best wishes with joy. They held a pure and festive celebration, which is truly rare and precious. How wonderful and joyful the banquet was. No animals were killed for the banquet. Isn't this wonderful? In all, everything depends on our mind.

Everyone, time passes very quickly. I keep mentioning the same problems because a minor problem can end up affecting the whole world. I hope that the outbreak will end quickly so we can all regain safety and peace. For everyone to get back to a normal life, it all depends on our mindset. Let us all pray with one heart, practice vegetarianism, abstain form killing, and nurture a loving heart within. Thank you all and my best wishes to you.
