20200513日淨己心照人間Remembering the Buddha by Living Out His Teachings

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries have imposed a lockdown and restricted travel so as to maintain social distancing. So, we needed to give much thought to how our Buddha Day ceremonies could be held so that everyone could still take part with sincere piety. In the face of the pandemic, this year we must all the more be sincerely pious and inspire more to harbor love within and safeguard people’s lives.

As we love people and cherish their lives, we should keep a safe distance from others and follow preventive measures so everyone can enjoy good health. Apart from loving people and safeguarding their lives, we should also know that animals are living beings too. So, we must extend our love to animals and stop the killing of animals by promoting vegetarianism unceasingly.

The Buddha taught us that everyone shares the same Buddha nature. It’s just that many people are difficult to guide due to their unwholesome habitual tendencies. It is very hard for them to change their way of life and refrain from eating meat. This is very worrying. Thankfully, everyone has more or less awakened to the cause of the pandemic.

We see that at night, on the other side of the Earth, many Tzu Chi volunteers walked for several hours to our office. After a short rest, they joined in our Buddha Day ceremony at one or two o’clock via videoconferencing when we began the ceremony here at seven in the morning. It was also one or two o’clock in Jordan. Despite the difference in time zones, our Tzu Chi members took part simultaneously. This is very touching to see.

Also, in Ormoc City of the Philippines, our volunteers held mobile Buddha Day ceremonies. For that, they’d obtained approval. Three vehicles were used for the ceremonies. In the villages we built for those affected by Typhoon Haiyan, our volunteers visited more than 1,500 families from door to door. The vehicles would stop in front of their houses so they could all attend a Buddha Day ceremony with sincere piety. The ceremonies are all very touching.

Even more touching is the buffalo that took part in a bowing pilgrimage last year. There is a touching story about the buffalo. One day, eh buffalo was to be slaughtered. Learning of that, our volunteer, Mr. Alfredo Li, bought the buffalo. Then, it was adopted by a villager. To give back to Tzu Chi’s aid, the villager guided the buffalo mindfully. Last year, when he took part in our bowing pilgrimage, he had the buffalo carry two stalks of bananas on its back. When its owner prostrated, it’d also do the same.

This year, with the vehicles for Buddha Day ceremonies, he and his buffalo could take part in a Buddha Day ceremony on his farm. In all, we need to cherish both people’s lives and animals’ lives. Just think, when we protect animals with love, they will also give back, just like the buffalo. Such is love. Such is the equality of all living beings expounded by the Buddha.

Everyone is equal too, even if some are material rich, some are material poor, some are spiritually rich, and some are spiritually poor. Although some people are wealthy, they are still in suffering. Driven by greed, they are never content with what they have. Contrarily, some people are materially poor, but they are spiritually rich. It is rare and precious to be spiritually rich. Many of our volunteers are not materially rich, but they can sustain their lives and have become spiritually rich by helping the needy. This is very touching.

We see how our volunteers visited the villagers from door to door so they could attend the Buddha Day ceremony in front of their houses with sincere piety. The villagers also made offerings as a show of respect to the Buddha. Many of the volunteers are villagers too. They care for the other villagers with love while observing COVID-19 precautions. Although they have to maintain social distancing, they’ve brought love to the other villagers.

Seeing how they’ve offered long-term care to the other villagers and how the buffalo has attended the ceremony, we now understand that this small village, which we built for disaster survivors , has truly set a good example by becoming the most harmonious of all villages. I’m very touched.

Our volunteers in Malaysia are equally dedicated. For many days, they’d worked very mindfully to share with people how to attend our Buddha Day ceremony via videoconferencing amid the pandemic. Although mass gatherings were prohibited, our volunteers have inspired love and sincere piety in many people.

There are truly many touching stories to share. I hope that we can all pass on the Buddha’s teachings at all times. The Buddha came to this world to guide us with the true principles of life. These principles are to be practiced in the world. So, we must take in the Buddha’s teachings with sincere piety.

I’m grateful to our Tzu Chi members for pooling everyone’s love together. I hope that we can all bathe our inner Buddha every day. There is an inner Buddha within all of us. We must bathe it every day so it will always be pure, shine brightly, and exert its super power. This is doable for everyone.
