Subject: Bringing Peace to Society Through Love

See how disasters are occurring around the world.
All this is a result of the disharmony among people who are constantly competing and fighting, thus creating a strong force of impurity that is causing unfavorable climate conditions.
So, we humans truly must reflect more upon ourselves, repent of our ways, and give rise to a broad, simple, and pure heart.
When we interact with one another, what matters most is not our power, fame, or wealth, but whether we care for one another with love.
Loving care is what we must show to one another as it is the most genuine, beautiful, and kind language to communicate with others.

Let me share a very interesting fable about two horses with you. One was a state horse and other was a steed.
Both were very fine horses and their masters were good friends.
One day, the two masters went riding together on their horses.
While they were talking and riding side by side, all of a sudden, the steed turned to the state horse and bit him hard on his neck.
The two masters did not know what had happened between the two horses, but it happened very quickly and everything went back to normal soon afterwards. After a while, they parted and went home.

After returning home with his master, the steed started to tremble all over and would not eat nor drink. Several days went by, but the condition persisted. So, the steed’s master visited the master of the state horse and told him about what was happening.
The master of the state horse immediately understood, and said: ”Please do not worry, I’ll bring my horse to see your horse today”

So, later that day, the state horse and his master arrived.
The state horse went over to the steed and gently sniffed the steed as if comforting him.
Thought the steed initially seemed dejected, he soon responded to the state horse and regained his spirit.
Seeing that, the two masters understood that the steed had been suffering from guilt and felt deeply remorseful for his actions.
That was why the steed couldn’t let go of what he did.

But now, the two horses had made peace. So, being able to forgive others is a virtue.
The state horse truly has a big heart, so he was able to forgive the steed while the steed also knew he was wrong and felt very guilt.
But look at humans. Some people never know they are wrong and make the same mistakes again and again out of their greed, anger, and ignorance and remain in the same deluded ways.
It is very difficult for them to reflect upon themselves.
They are always accusing others and cannot tell right from wrong.

For years, I’ve kept saying that it saddens me to see how people can’t tell right from wrong.
With so many deluded people in the world, how can there be peace in society?
So, to bring about a blessed and stable society, people must care for one another with love and encourage and praise one another.
Only then can our world be one of truth, beauty, and goodness.

Lately, Tzu Chi volunteers around the world are promoting vegetarianism and repentance.
The images we see were taken at Toyota in Southern California, U.S.A.
The vice president of the dealership, Mr. David Hall has known Tzu Chi for years and every time he takes part in Tzu Chi’s activity, he enjoys it very much.

Through these activities, he learned that Tzu Chi promotes a vegetarian diet.
Knowing that a vegetarian diet is considered a low carbon diet that minimizes carbon emissions and is good for people’s body and mind, he invited Tzu Chi volunteers to take part in a wellness project of his company.
He designated the last day of each month to be Tzu Chi Day, a day when Tzu Chi volunteers host a vegetarian luncheon and share about Tzu Chi whit them.
He truly takes care of his staff’s body and mind and further encourages them to emulate Tzu Chi’s spirit of (selfless Great Love) to care for people in the world.

So, when the earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan last month, Mr. Hall volunteered to help collect donations for Tzu Chi from his staff because he trusts that Tzu Chi will put it to good use.
It is truly very touching to see him working inspire goodness in his staff. If everyone in society can be like Mr. Hall, it’d make our world most beautiful.

Today is April 13, a significant day in Tzu Chi’s history.
It was the day when the Indonesian government officially renamed the Angke River in Jakarta as Tzu Chi Angke River (in 2008).

Back in 2002, Jakarta was affected by severe flooding.
When Tzu Chi volunteers went there to provide aid, they discovered how polluted the Angke River was.
Seeing so many people living in shanties along the river, Tzu Chi volunteers decided to help relocate these people to a place with better living conditions.
That’s how we began planning and building permanent housing for those living in the shanties along the Angke River.

Since the flooding in 2002, it’s been almost ten years now.
Thanks to the cleanup effort, one section of the river is now seven meters deep with water flowing freely.
Our volunteer in Indonesia, Mr. Kusuma told me they will be holding another dragon boat race on the river in May. Recounting this part of Tzu Chi’s history always warms our hearts.

See how many local businesspeople in Indonesia have been inspired to give of themselves with love because of Tzu Chi.
They pooled their strength together to carry out Tzu Chi’s work there, but they gave all the credit their efforts to Tzu Chi in Taiwan.
Seeing how they never forget their roots, I’m truly grateful.
It is very heartwarming. This is how we can bring peace to society.

They pooled their strength together to carry out Tzu Chi’s work there, but they gave all the credit their efforts to Tzu Chi in Taiwan. Seeing how they never forget their roots, I’m truly grateful.
