我們昨天說過了,在十住行中,第八是童真住。「佛之十身靈相」,佛陀來人間,就是現種種身形,無不都是要來,啟發眾生一念的真心,如何能與道會合?這是佛陀來人間智慧的教育。
所以他的十身,無不都是靈相,都是啟發人人這念心。只要我們用心,若能如此說,「一時具足,如童身之貴」。
人人與佛有同等的智慧、清淨的本性,所以什麼叫做十身?我們來看看佛的十身。
十身:
眾生身、國土身、業報身
聲聞身、獨覺身、菩薩身
如來身、智 身、法 身
虛空身

我們現在先說,第一「眾生身」。眾生不光是指人,在六道中,都有不同的身體的生命,這叫做眾生。光是在人間,所看得到的生靈、物命、形體有多少?那是幾千萬種不同的生命體,這叫做眾生的身形不同。
不論是什麼樣的眾生身形,只要他有生命,他都不離開五蘊。五蘊會合起來,所以構成了生命。無論是胎生、化生、濕生、卵生等等,都不離開五蘊所會和。
你不要說:「五蘊,色、受、想、行、識,這些五蘊人類有。其他的有嗎?」有!其他的生靈世界,同樣有牠的色,色就是形,螞蟻有螞蟻的形、蟲有蟲的形、大象有大象的形,這全部都叫做色。
當然對色再另外分析,還有四大,不過,我們現在只談形,那就是色。
受,感受,外面的境界,對我們有什麼感受?有,看螞蟻那麼小,我們知道牠肚子餓,就要去找吃的。你聽過人說:「螞蟻扛大餅。」較大的食物,牠們就要動員,要有很多(螞蟻)來扛,扛這塊大餅,合心、和氣、互愛、協力,才能把這塊大餅,扛進牠們的洞,螞蟻洞中,大家來分享。
你想,這難道不是眾生界,牠的感受、牠的想法,所以牠們的行動?不論是什麼樣的眾生界,哪怕是這麼小的東西,一樣都有五蘊。會合起來就生出,牠的身、牠的色,我們看得到的東西。
如果說到這件事,我就想到,我看到新聞的報導,在日本的動物園裡,有一頭猩猩阿嬤,牠的名字叫做吉普賽,很靈活,牠會做事情,譬如牠會去用水桶提水,牠會擦窗戶、擦桌子。而且要使用抹布,牠還要先戴手套,牠也會保護這雙玉手,手套戴上再來擰抹布。沒有一樣牠不會做。來參觀動物園的人,多數都是愛看這位猩猩阿嬤!
這就是眾生,不只是人類萬能,其實其他的動物,同樣看到一隻九官鳥,牠會說很多種話,會說日語、會說德語、會說法語、會說英語和我們的國語,還會說臺語。
甚至看到了人就向人說:「阿彌陀佛!」這也是動物,不一樣的身形,但是牠有這樣的功能。所以我們不能輕視任何一種動物,何況我們能輕視任何一個人嗎?
所以我們應該要知道,佛陀現身在人間,就是要來教育我們,教育我們行道要守真,從我們這念最真誠的心,投入修行。我們在日常生活中,和我們所要走、所要精進的道路,不能違背。佛陀怎麼教我們?道理如何說?我們應該要守真,我們要會道,這樣我們才能真真正正體會到天地萬物真理。
以最真誠的心
投入修行
用靜寂清澄的心
感受天地萬物
才能體會其中的真理

所以我們要知道,眾生身就是「五蘊眾共和合」的時候,這樣才有眾生的身相。這樣就叫做「有情世間,諸眾生身。」
有情世間剛才說過了,所有的東西都叫做有情的世間,只要牠有生命,螞蟻、蟲這都是有情。你若是看牠整群時,動一下,牠就很惶恐,四散奔逃了。這就是叫做「有情」。鳥停在樹上,你若用人在樹下稍微搖一下,鳥也是整群飛走,這都是叫做有情。
因為在牠們的世界,有外來的侵犯,所以為了保護,牠們就惶恐四散逃命,這都叫做有情。
所以這些有情界的眾生,都是五蘊眾共和合,這些東西所共和合的。所以我們要時時,用我們的智慧與世間會合,這樣我們的道心才能很堅固。
有情界的眾生
皆是五蘊共合而成
時時運用智慧
體會天地萬物之理
道心才能堅固

第二叫做「國土身」。國土身,就是「山河大地、諸器世間所有」,這叫做國土身。我們不要說:「山河大地這都沒什麼。」其實佛陀就是教育我們,教育我們山河大地,也是有它的生命。所以,我們都常常,現在的人類不懂得保護大地,不斷創傷這片大地,現在這片大地傷痕累累。
過去我不是說過了,大地之母運載著眾生,無論是植物、動物、人物,天地萬物之中,不都是這片大地浮載著嗎?偏偏就是大地的眾生,污染它、破壞它。你看,現在和我們共住,眾生住在大地上,看到大地傷痕累累,我們還不反省,所以就會有這種,因為大地受了污染,變成氣候完全異常起來。
化學的東西太多了,人污染的氣實在是太濁了。大地能吸收這種污染的能力,總是有限,所以它就會無法再吸收。以前你看,髒水經過大地過濾,經過土、沙把它過濾過,那些水就能用了。以前的人都是用這種天然的過濾方式。
我們精舍以前也是,我們用一個蓄水池,這個蓄水池就做兩層,下面是清水,上面的水就是外來的水,這個外來的水下面,我們就要鋪石頭,先鋪一些大石頭,然後就鋪一些木炭,然後我們再鋪沙,上面再鋪網子等等,髒水下來時,經過了石頭、木炭、沙、網、樟樹,一層一層鋪過去;外面的水來了,經過了這一層一層沈澱,過濾過的水,在下面是乾淨的。
我們拿下面的水來飲用,很乾淨。但是我們半年或是一年,我們就要清一遍水池,因為石頭要再拿起來洗一洗,木炭也要拿出來刷一刷,甚至沙也要經過篩、經過洗,這是我們從前精舍生活用水的方法。我們可以證明,不無論是石頭,不論是沙,不論是木炭或是樟樹,拿來鋪一鋪,這樣就能過濾成清水。
已經不行了,現在很多的化學物質,人的生活什麼都靠化學,無論是你住的房子,住的房子門窗、天花板、地板,現在很多都是用合成、塑膠類來合成,或是塑鋼。
在我們的生活中,很多東西,都是離不開這種東西,就像我們現在用電腦也是一樣。在製造的過程,取大地的資源,污染大地的土壤,無論是土壤受污染、水源受污染,很多的毒素變成在大地上很普遍,大地所能吸收的實在還是有限,所以就是變成了這個氣,污染,整個整片的這個空間,所以變成了溫室效應。這是現代的名詞。
氣候已經都變了,溫度一直升高起來。為什麼颱風會這麼多?在美國那裡的颶風會那麼大?這就是在海面的熱度、溫度高,溫度高,四大無法調和,所以這種無法調和,五蘊無法調和,所以變成在大地與空間之間,變成不得調和。所以這種風大、水大都不調,就是因為地大不調。
所以國土身就是在啟示我們,佛陀教育我們,大地萬物,哪怕是山河,從前的人都說:「有山神、有樹神。」這是以前的人,他們會敬天畏地,這樣很好,有時想要倒髒水下去,他們也說這有水公、水婆。以前人的排洩物,骯髒的會拿去倒在水溝裡,若是去倒在水溝裡,都會說:「感恩啊!水公、水婆,感恩啊!」
但是現在的人,對於這種污穢的東西,任憑它這樣倒,所以連溪川河流都受污染。這是我們人不懂得敬天愛地,我們要敬畏天地,我們要呵護、愛天地,天氣,風調雨順,我們人才能夠平安、幸福過日子。
大地就是要調和,我們在大地上住,才能五榖豐收,人人才能平安。但是我們現在就是缺這念心。
人依靠大地而生
應該要以感恩心
好好疼惜這片土地
唯有大地調和
我們才能平安幸福

各位,真的,我們要時時多用心,修行要守真合道。不只是我們自己,現在還要再以身作則,身教、言教,多多啟發人人這分清淨心,還是要大家時時多用心!

Subject: Ten Bodies (Part 1) (
十身一)
 
Yesterday we discussed the Ten Abiding Conducts, of which the eighth is Abiding in Childlike Innocence. “Buddha has Ten Auspicious Forms.” The Buddha came into our world and manifested in various physical forms to inspire the pure mind of all living beings and guide them onto the Path. Those were the Buddha’s teachings.
 
His Ten Bodies are all auspicious so He can inspire the pure mind in everyone. If we are attentive to our minds, we can “be complete, as precious as childlike innocence.” All human beings possess the same wisdom and pure nature as the Buddha.
 
So what are the Ten Bodies? The Ten Bodies of the Buddha are:
First, Sentient-Being-body.
Second, Land-body.
Third, Karma-body.
Fourth, Sravaka-body.
Fifth, Pratyekabuddha-body.
Sixth, Bodhisattve-body.
Seventh, Tathagata-body.
Eight, Wisdom-body.
Ninth, Dharma-body.
And tenth, Absolute-Space-body.
 
Let us first discuss Sentient-Being-body. Sentient being does not only refer to humans. In the Six Realms, there are various life forms. They are all sentient beings. In our world alone, we see beings of different life spans and forms. There are millions of types of living beings, all with different physical forms.
 
Regardless of their form, as long as they are alive, they are of the Five Aggregates. The Five Aggregates combine to create life. Those born from the womb, or transformation, moisture, eggs, etc., are all composed of the Five Aggregates. Do not think that the Five Aggregates, form, sensation, perception, action, consciousness are only possessed by human beings.
 
Do other creatures have them? Yes. Other creatures also have their own forms. Form is appearance. Ants have the appearance of ants. Insects have the appearance of insects. Elephants have the appearance of elephants. All these appearances are called form. Besides appearances, form also involves the Four Elements.
 
But we are only talking about appearance now. Sensation is feeling. Do we have feelings towards external conditions? Yes. Although the ant is small, when it is hungry, it will look for food. People say, “Ants carry big bread.” When ants spot a larger piece of food, they mobilize many ants to carry it. They work in unity, harmony, love and cooperation to move a big piece of bread into their colony and share it.
 
Think about it: don’t the sensations and perceptions of living beings determine their actions? It does not matter which Realm of beings, even those as small as ants are born when the five Aggregates combine to create their form. Talking about this reminds me of a news report I saw.
 
In a zoo in Japan there was an old female gorilla named Gypsy. Gypsy was very clever. She could do many tasks, such as fetching water with a bucket, cleaning windows and wiping tables. Before cleaning, she would even put on gloves to protect her hands. There were no chores she could not do. Many people visited the zoo for a glimpse of Gypsy. She was a living being.
 
Not only are humans capable, so are other animals. There was a similar story about a mynah bird. It spoke many languages, Japanese, German, French, English, Mandarin, and Taiwanese. It even greeted people by saying, “Amitabha.” Although they are animals with different forms, they still possess abilities.
 
We should not disparage any kind of animal, let alone any human. So, we should know that the Buddha appeared in this world to teach us to uphold truth and purity in our practice. With utmost sincerity, dedicate yourselves to spiritual practice. When we deal with daily matters and walk the Path, we choose to practice with vigor, and not go against the principles the Buddha taught us.
 
We should safeguard truth and purity [of mind] and unite with the true Path. In doing so, we can truly realize the universal Truth.
 
With a heart of utmost sincerity, dedicate yourself to your spiritual practice. With a heart of clarity and purity, feel and understand everything in the universe. Then you will be able to realize the Truth. We should understand that living beings come from “the composite of the Five Aggregates the composite.” That’s how their forms take shape. The “world of sentient begins is that of all forms.” It was mentioned earlier that all entities are sentient beings, as long as they are alive and have feelings.
 
Ants and other insects are sentient beings. When they are all in a group, a slight movement can them, and make them scatter in all directions, because they are sentient beings. When birds perch on treetops, if someone shakes the tree trunk gently, the whole flock will fly away, because birds are sentient beings. When there are perceived threats, to protect themselves, birds flee for their lives. They are sentient beings that are composites of the Five Aggregates.
 
So, we must constantly use our wisdom when interacting with the world, so that our resolve to follow the Path never wavers.
 
Sentient beings are composites of the Five Aggregates. We should always apply wisdom to truly understand the principle of things in the universe, so that we remain steadfast in our resolve to follow the Path.
 
The second is Land-body, which consists of “hills, rivers and land, all in the natural world.” This is the Land-body. We must not disregard the environment. The Buddha taught us that nature has its own life.
 
People nowadays do not know how to protect the land, and continuously harm it. Now the Earth is terrible scarred. I have said that Mother Nature supports all sentient beings, including plants, animals and men. Doesn’t the land support everything in this world? But people pollute and destroy it.
 
Even after we have seen the land damaged extensively, we still fail to reflect. Many kinds of pollution have caused drastic climate changes. There is too much chemical pollution, far beyond the capability of the land to absorb it.
 
In the past, unclean water could be filtered by using stones and sand, and could become usable again. Back then, people used this natural filtering method. In the Abode, we used to have a water reservoir. It had two compartments – the lower contained distilled water, the upper held water collected from outside. On the base of the upper compartment we laid large stones, charcoal, then sand, charcoal, then sand, mesh, etc. The water ran through the stones, charcoal, sand, mesh and camphor tree bark, one layer after another. After that, the water that flowed into the lower compartment was clean. We used to drink this water.
 
Every six months to a year, we needed to clean the reservoir. The stones needed a thorough rinse, the charcoal had to be brushed, even the sand had to be sieved and washed. This was how we used to obtain water. We can confirm that stones, sand, charcoal and camphor tree bark can be used to filter sediment from water.
 
Nowadays, we cannot do that. There are many chemicals. People rely on chemicals, which are found in their houses, in the windows, ceilings, and floors. Today many are used in the production of plastics. Many products we use every day are made of these materials - computers, for instance. Manufacturing computers requires resources from the land and creates pollution. Many toxins remain in the land and water. The toxicity that the land can absorb is limited. So the pollution turns into gases that contaminate the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. Climate change is a modern term. Global climates have changed, temperatures have risen.
 
Why are there so many typhoons? Why are the hurricanes in the US so powerful? It is because of the heat on the ocean surface. The high temperature does not allow the Four Elements to adjust. These inharmonious conditions lead to the discord of the Five Aggregates, causing the land and atmosphere to lose balance. So lack of harmony in Wind and Water Elements is due to the inharmonious Earth Element.
 
So what the Land-body reveals to us is what the Buddha taught. Everything on Earth, including mountains and rivers, should be revered. Back then, people talked about mountain and tree gods. Our ancestors respected heaven and earth. This was a good thing. When throwing out dirty water, they would think about the water gods. In the past, people threw waste into gutters, but would express gratitude to the water deities.
 
In contrast, people now dump their waste at will, polluting the rivers and streams. We lack appreciation for heaven and earth. We should revere our land and take great care of it. Only with harmonious climates can we lead a blessed and happy life. The land has to be in harmony, so people can enjoy good harvests and live in peace.
 
However, we now lack resolve in achieving this. We rely on Earth for our living. Therefore, with a heart of gratitude, we should cherish this land. Only when the earth is in harmony, can we be safe and blessed.
 
Everyone, we really must be mindful constantly. Our practice is being pure, uniting with the Path. We should not only do so ourselves, but set examples with our actions and speech to inspire the purity in the hearts of others. So, we must always be mindful.
