A footage showed a winter aid distributions on Jan. 25th , 1989 at the Jing Si Abod.
For the winter aid distributions, before giving people the aid supplies, we must use our hands to pack the aid supplies with love and in a very neat and orderly manner.
The supplies should be carefully stacked and tightly bundled so that when people receive the parcels by post and open them, they’ll see that every item was neatly placed, with all the clothes nicely folded.
Seeing that, they’ll be happy.
When they’re happy, it means that we’ve passed our love to them.

See how Tzu Chi volunteers have been passing on the tradition of winter aid distributions for so many years as this year is Tzu Chi’s 45th year.
Tzu Chi was founded in 1966, and it was in 1969 that we held our first winter aid distribution to give out aid packages.
These packages were prepared at the Jing Si Abod up to 1990 when Tzu Chi volunteers in different areas took over the work.
So, we’d been putting together these packages at the Abode for about 20 years.
Even though that was years ago, we were already environmentally aware.
We collected paper bags and cardboard boxes from others and used them to package the aid items.
Every aid item had to be very carefully packed so that no item would get damaged or broken.
Everyone made sure that every item was placed in the box in the same direction and position, and this tradition has been very mindfully passed on to Tzu Chi volunteers everywhere.

Now, our winter aid distribution are held all across Taiwan.
This year, there will be a total of 37 winter aid distributions and reunion meals to benefit over 16,000 families in different parts of Taiwan.
No matter where the aid distribution is held, our volunteers all work to pass their love to our care recipients and to bring warmth to their hearts.

“I come to do what I can to help because for years, I’ve been receiving help from others. By doing this, I came to know that the gifts I received were packed with such care and love.”

This lady has truly felt our love, so now she is even more grateful and cherish the supplies we give even more.
Indeed, sometimes we should let our care recipients know that the gifts they receive come from everyone’s love and also give them an opportunity to serve others.

“Saving coins in coin bank is good as the money can help others. When I saw people pouring coins from their banks last year, I wished I could do that, too. I’m happy I got to do it in this year.”

We saw that diplomats from Paraguay, Haiti, EI Salvador and Guatemala also joined our volunteers to serve at our winter aid distribution and reunion meal in Guandu, Taipei.
It truly shows how the love of Tzu Chi volunteers knows no boundaries.

A couple of a military officer comes from Paraguay live in Taiwan said: “Training to be a certified member isn’t easy, but the harder it is, the harder we should try. Even though language is barrier for us, as long as we work, I’m sure we can complete the training and help more people in need.”

We truly must work hard to spread the seeds of love across the world.
Otherwise, see how disasters are devastating different parts of the world every day and how erratic climate conditions have become.
That is why I keep thinking to myself that we must move faster as time is running out.
Time is truly running out.
Nevertheless, I still hope that our efforts to eliminate disasters in the world can be hastened and more widespread.

To eliminate disasters in the world and bring peace and harmony to society, we must start by purifying people’s hearts and minds.
To do that, we must first look within and reflect upon ourselves with a still and tranquil mind.
That is a mind in the state of quiet contemplation.

Most of the time, our mind is as restless and uncontrollable as a wild horse.
When the horse gallops in the desert, it stirs up dust and sand wherever it passes.
So, just like how we rein in a wild horse, we must work to calm and settle our minds so that we can contemplate with a still mind and pass on the Buddha’s teachings to others.
May we all clam our minds and contemplate upon the Buddha’s teachings we’ve learned and further pass them on to others.
What does it mean to pass on the Buddha’s teachings to others?
It is to live them out in our daily lives.

We must let people in the world know that Buddhism is not only a religion, but a way of living that everyone can adopt.
That is why we must work mindfully to live out the Buddha’s teachings in our daily lives and spread these teachings to people everywhere so that they can also learn and practice the Buddha’s teachings in their lives.

As Tzu Chi members who serve others like living bodhisattvas, we must exercise both compassion and wisdom.
While walking on the Tzu Chi path, we must also realize that Bodhisattvas are right in our hearts.
Within everyone’s heart, there is a temple as well as a bodhisattva we can awaken.
So, I hope everyone can open up their hearts and walk the path of Tzu Chi.

Everyone has loving-kindness and compassion within and in everything we do, we must use our wisdom and compassion like that of Bodhisattvas.
We should not only cultivate our ourselves, but also inspire others to do the same.
This is what we do when we walk the Tzu Chi path to help others and inspire love in them.

And to do that, we need to use our wisdom and compassion and willingly give of ourselves with a joyful and grateful hearts.
As we go through cycles of rebirth, it is rare to be born as humans and even more so to come in contact with the Buddha’s teachings.
For that, we should be grateful and respectful toward what we have.

The Buddha’s teachings can cleanse our minds and guide us onto the correct path in life.
We must be even more grateful for having paved the path of Tzu Chi.
It is through the join efforts of everyone that Tzu Chi has become what it is today and that we have this path walk on to serve others with a joyful heart and continue to pave the path as we serve.
To do that, one person’s effort is not enough.
We need many people to do that with us.
So, we must be grateful to one another respect one another, and love one another.
Apart from walking the path ourselves, we must inspire more people to join our rank.
It’s just like how when we have a piece of land, we plant trees and sow seeds on it so that this land can become lush and beautiful.
This is how we can sow blessings with love by inspiring others to join our efforts.
One person’s effort is not enough, just like how a tree is not as beautiful as when it’s surrounded by grass, flowers, etc.
Only when we pool everyone’s strength together can we create a beautiful world of goodness.
