Subject: Practicing the Four Bodhisattva Virtues 以四攝法隨緣度

The mixed feelings that I experience every day are truly very hard to describe.
Although my heart is full of gratitude at every moment of every day,
I also feel a sense of heartache and worry all the time.
These are truly very complicated feelings.
Nevertheless, over 2,500 years ago, the Buddha had already taught us that this world we live in is one where we must be able to endure suffering.
Having been born into this world, we must be able to endure suffering.
Although we may experience different feelings every day, having learned the Buddha’s teachings, we should practice moral discipline, samadhi, and wisdom in our everyday lives, and also be prudent and sincerely pious at all times.
We must keep our minds still and calm.
In a day, we may experience grief and sorrow, joy and happiness.
These are the feelings we may have every day.
So, we must take good care of our minds and keep our minds still and calm so that we won’t be affected by what others do or say.
Only when we have cultivated moral discipline and samadhi can we give rise to wisdom.
And, with wisdom, we will be able to clearly understand everything we come across in life.
So, if we bear the Dharma in our hearts, we’ll be able to stay calm in any situation.

Recently, I’ve been saying that time is running out.
Indeed, major disasters have been occurring around the world one after another.
And on March 11, Japan was devastated by quake-induced tsunami.
Eleven days have gone by, yet nearly half a million people remain homeless.
So, the Japanese government is now building 30,000 temporary housing units.
See, hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes, and perhaps, could never reunite with their loved ones.
What pain and suffering the survivors have to endure.
And now they will have to reside in small housing units, perhaps for quite a while.
I have been thinking about how we can provide mid-and long-term care to the survivors.
But with few Tzu Chi volunteers in Japan, and the distance between Taiwan and Japan, just how are we to provide long-term care there?

Despite the many difficulties we face, I always tell myself to quickly change my way of thinking and seize the time now to just do what is right.
I want to keep calling on each and every person to give rise to the heart of the Buddha.
As we all possess the same Buddha heart within, I hope that everyone can bring out their Buddha heart within so that the Buddha heart in every one of us can manifest.
We should draw our hearts close to the Buddha’s and join our hearts with his.
We must further strive to give rise to a heart of goodness and do a good deed each day.
We should all bear a heart of goodness because the Buddha heart is one of goodness.

We truly must seize the time now to sow blessings and form good karmic affinities.
This is what we can all do very easily.
With the spirit of Great Love, we must work to spread seeds of love in everyone so that people will give of their love to others when these seeds sprout in their hearts.
Everyone, please pass on with the spirit of Great Love.
That’s what I hope everyone can do.

After the disasters in Japan this time, many people in other parts of the world have been worried about being affected by the radiation released from a damaged unclear power plant.
At this time, what we should do is deeply reflect upon ourselves for the wrongs we have done and look at how we can sow blessings by doing good together to lessen the bad collective karma we’ve created.

I am truly grateful that on March 20, Da Ai TV aired a special live program that was broadcast throughout the world via satellite.
This special program brought everyone together to pray and send their love to Japan.
Our volunteers in Chile to sent in a fax to give Japan their best wishes.
When Chile was hit by a magnitude-8.8 earthquake last year, Tzu Chi volunteers went to their aid ,and because of this, there are now local Tzu Chi volunteers in Chile.
So, that night, our volunteers in Chile also gave their best to the people in Japan.

In the program we also saw the disaster survivors of Typhoon Morakot that struck Taiwan in 2009.
At the time, Tzu Chi volunteers in 52 countries mobilized to raise funds for building permanent homes for Morakot survivors.
As they have settled down their lives, they are now able to give of their love to the disaster survivors in Japan.
The special program that night truly brought people everywhere together to extend their love to Japan.

I am very touched to witness the Four Bodhisattva Virtues in all that everyone did that night.
The first of the four virtues is giving.
See how many people gave their time and came together for the cause of love.
Many of them also donated money and offered encouraging words to send their support to the people in Japan.
So, in the program that night, I saw the giving of financial assistance, Dharma, and support.

The second virtue is loving speech, which is to bring comfort to others.
Apart from doing so ourselves, we must also encourage others to speak kind words, do good deeds, and give rise to sincere piety and good thoughts.

The third virtue is beneficial actions, which is about joyfully giving of ourselves with a compassionate heart.
Besides offering loving and encouraging words, we must also act with compassion and joyfully give of ourselves to help.
This is to benefit others through actions.

The fourth virtue is inspiring others to work together with us.
To do that, we must seize every opportunity that arises.
We must guide others to diligently walk the Bodhisattva Path with us and encourage them to do so continuously rather than just temporarily.

These are the Four Bodhisattva Virtues of giving, loving speech, beneficial actions and inspiring others.
See, this is how everyone is giving of themselves.
So, we must guide everyone to bring out their Buddha heart within and to do a good deed each day with their heart of goodness so that they can inspire more people to do the same.

What I really need now is the love in everyone’s heart.
I truly hope that the light in everyone’s heart can shine forth so that the darkness in the world can be dispelled and the world can become bright and beautiful.
This is what we need the most at this time.
