20130516--The True Meaning of Filial Piety精進不懈勿矜誇

With a heart of sincere piety, we pray for everyone to be safe
and well. This is what we sincerely pray for every day. But,
to have peace and safety we need to first take the law of cause and effect
seriously. We reap what we sow, so we need to sow good seeds.

To do that, we can start with our hearts--- We should open our
hearts to give of ourselves with love.
At the same time, we should reduce our desires, lead a simpler life and
cherish our resources. By doing so, we’re sowing seeds of abundance.
But, if we are very wasteful, we’re sowing seeds of poverty.

When we are wasteful of the resources we have, we’ll eventually
bring disaster to the world. So, it’s very important that everyone takes good care of their minds and works hard
to nurture their wisdom and sow blessings by opening their hearts to give with love.

Yesterday, Tzu Chi U.S. volunteers received a “Member of the Year
Award” from NVOAD, a coalition of major voluntary organizations in the U.S. Last year when Superstorm Sandy hit the
U.S. Northeast, Tzu Chi volunteers in Greater New York and those from other
states of the U.S all mobilized to help.

Indeed, for the disaster this time, Tzu Chi volunteers have done a lot to help. I’m also grateful to
our volunteers in Taiwan. Although they didn’t go to the U.S., they’d worked hard to collect donations.
To help Sandy survivors, our U.S. volunteers worked tirelessly for several months.

Then, there was also the fertilizer plant explosion in Texas. Learning of the disaster, Tzu Chi
volunteers immediately brought aid and care to those affected.
They were even allowed to go to the affected areas to survey the disaster situation.

So, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommended Tzu
Chi to NOVAD for the award. Among the 109 members of NOVAD, five were nominated and Tzu Chi was the one that
received the award. At the award ceremony, our U.S. volunteers thanked Tzu Chi in Taiwan.

They’ve never forgot their roots. Seeing how they gave all the credit of
their effort to Tzu Chi in Taiwan, I am truly very moved.
They give unconditionally, but they don’t claim the credit for themselves. It’s very
touching. On Da Ai News, we’ve seen many reports about our celebrations for Buddha Day, Mother’s Day, and Tzu
Chi Day.

Indeed, we should be grateful to the Buddha as he compassionately
guided us onto the path toward enlightenment and nurtured our wisdom. So, we must always be grateful to the
Buddha. We should also be grateful to our parents. They
guide us and raise us so we are indebted to them for their love and care.

What does it mean to be filial to our parents?
Filial piety involves deep love for our parents.
We owe our parents the debt of gratitude. That’s why on Mother’s Day, our
volunteers will hold many events to promote filial piety.

How do you feel about washing your mom’s feet?
I’m very happy. Happy Mother’s Day Gradma, are you happy?""Yes, I’m happy. ""Okay. That’s
enough. I’ve never expressed my love for my mom-in-law. So, I’m very grateful for having this opportunity to wash
her feet today.

This is the first time I washed my mom’s feet. I know I’m hardly a good daughter. I’m really sorry. I’ll spend more time with her. See how these events give children an opportunity to thank
their parents and show their deep love for them. It is truly touching to see.

In Fujian Province, China, our volunteers put on a skit to show parents’ love for their
children in order to remind children to pay their debt of gratitude to their
parents. Oftentimes, when people realize how much their parents have done for them, it’s already too late as
their parents are not around anymore. Such a skit on filial piety was very inspiring and moving
to see.

In other parts of Fujian Province and Guangdong Province, our volunteers also held
various events to promote filial piety and remind people to be grateful to their
parents and everyone around us. This is in China.

Here in
Taiwan, we see how the children at our kindergartens piously attended the Buddha
Day ceremony. They’re truly adorable. A girl even served as an emcee. Bow at the Buddha’s
feet. Take a flower. Thank you. (See how professional she was). She even
told our reporter that she wished her parents peace and safety and prayed for a
world free of disaster. See how young children’s hearts are so genuine, pure, and
innocent and how sincere their prayers are. They’re truly very endearing.

We also see them offer tea to their parents or grandparents and wash their feet.
Such a life is very blessed, society will be peaceful and every family
will be happy. In life, doing good and being filial to our parents cannot
wait. If everyone can do so, we’ll create a cycle of goodness and the world will be very beautiful.

As blessed as we are, we should all the more give rise to gratitude and give of ourselves
with love so that we can truly create a cycle of goodness and love that will
live on forever.

This is what we should work harder to do.
When something is right, we should do it. When we find the correct path, we
should stride forward diligently.
